Our 11-day ABC Trek with Helicopter Return was phenomenal! Walking up through the blooming rhododendrons of Ghorepani, catching sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna from Poon Hill, and then entering the deep sanctuary was magical. Spending the night at Base Camp under the stars and flying out by helicopter directly to Pokhara the next morning saved our knees four days of steep descent stairs. Highly recommended!
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return — 11 Days
Walk through Ghorepani and into the Annapurna Sanctuary, then return from base camp to Pokhara by helicopter on our 11-day trek. The approach includes a Poon Hill sunrise hike before continuing through Chuile, Lower Sinuwa and Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m.
Key Trip Facts
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return — 11 Days Overview
Our 11-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return combines the approach through Ghorepani with a helicopter flight from the Annapurna Sanctuary. You hike to Poon Hill for sunrise, continue through Chuile and Lower Sinuwa, and reach base camp at 4,130 m. The return flight replaces the several-day descent on foot before you travel to Kathmandu.
After the road journey to Pokhara, you drive to Birethanti and begin walking towards Ulleri. Stone steps lead through terraced hillsides, followed by oak and rhododendron forests on the way to Ghorepani. The Poon Hill hike gives you an early view across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges before returning for breakfast. You then continue through Tadapani towards Chuile, joining the village trails leading into the Modi Khola valley.
Beyond Chuile, the route crosses towards Chhomrong and Lower Sinuwa before continuing through Bamboo and Dovan. Forest gradually gives way to open mountain slopes above Deurali. You pass Machhapuchhre Base Camp on the approach to Annapurna Base Camp, where Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli rise around the valley. This is your highest overnight stop.
The planned helicopter departs from base camp on Day 9 and lands in Pokhara. You then fly to Kathmandu the following day. This saves the return walking stages, but it does not reduce effort or altitude exposure on the ascent. Flights depend on weather and operating conditions, so allow flexibility rather than relying on a guaranteed departure from the mountains.
You stay in mountain teahouses during the trek and hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The programme covers arrival, the approach, helicopter return, onward flight and departure from Nepal.

Communication When Plans Change
Cloud, wind and poor visibility can affect the helicopter return and onward flight. Our team keeps you informed, explains available options and discusses changes, including costs for extra accommodation or travel arrangements.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Overnight: Kathmandu
Welcome to Nepal. Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and accompanies you to your hotel. After settling in, we discuss the route, equipment and return flights so you know what to expect before leaving Kathmandu.
Use the rest of the day to rest after your flight or take a short walk in the neighbourhood. You can also pick up any missing equipment or personal items before heading into the mountains tomorrow.
Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara
Around 6–8 hours by tourist bus • Approx. 200 km • Overnight: Pokhara
After breakfast, we leave Kathmandu by tourist bus and travel towards Pokhara. The journey follows the Prithvi Highway through river valleys, passing towns and farmland before reaching the lakeside city.
On arrival in Pokhara, transfer to your hotel and take time to unpack. The evening allows for a relaxed walk near Phewa Lake and final preparations for the trek.
Day 3: Drive to Birethanti and Trek to Ulleri
Around 1.5–2 hours from Pokhara to Birethanti • Around 9–11 km • Overnight: Ulleri
We drive from Pokhara to Birethanti, where the walking approach begins. The trail follows the Bhurungdi Khola through villages and terraced farmland before the steeper climb towards Ulleri.
Stone steps lead uphill towards Ulleri, providing a sustained ascent on the first walking day. We take regular pauses and arrive in the village with time to rest before dinner.
Day 4: Trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani
Around 4–5 hours • Approx. 8–9 km • Overnight: Ghorepani
Leaving Ulleri, we continue uphill towards Ghorepani through oak and rhododendron forest. The route passes smaller villages and streams, with stone steps on parts of the trail. Flowering is possible in forests during spring.
As we approach Ghorepani, the trees thin and lodges line the hillside. After settling into your room, your guide outlines the morning plan for Poon Hill.
Day 5: Trek from Ghorepani to Chuile
Around 5–6 hours • Approx. 9–11 km • Overnight: Poon Hill
Before dawn, we climb to Poon Hill at 3,210 m. In clear weather, sunrise brings views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. We return to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing trekking.
The trail continues towards Deurali ridge, descends through forest to Banthanti and passes Tadapani before reaching Chuile. The day involves both climbs and sustained downhill walking on forest tracks.
Day 6: Trek from Chuile to Lower Sinuwa
Around 5–6 hours • Approx. 9–11 km • Overnight: Lower Sinuwa
We descend from Chuile towards the Kimrong Khola and follow the route to Chhomrong. Forest paths and village trails link the hillsides, with uphill sections after the river crossing. We then continue towards Lower Sinuwa.
Beyond Chhomrong, the trail drops on stone steps towards the Chhomrong Khola before climbing again through forest to Lower Sinuwa. We stay here overnight.
Day 7: Trek from Lower Sinuwa to Deurali
Around 6–7 hours • Approx. 10–12 km • Overnight: Deurali
We climb from Lower Sinuwa towards Upper Sinuwa before continuing through the forest to Bamboo and Dovan. The trail follows the Modi Khola valley, with shorter climbs and descents between the groups of mountain teahouses.
Past Dovan and Himalaya Hotel, the valley narrows and trees give way to rocky slopes and scrub. Deurali lies in the narrower upper valley, where cooler air marks the gain in altitude before tomorrow’s climb.
Day 8: Trek from Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp
Around 5–6 hours • Approx. 8–10 km • Overnight: Annapurna Base Camp
From Deurali, we head towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp along the Modi Khola, taking care through rocky sections. The valley widens as we gain height, with views opening towards Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and neighbouring peaks.
We pause before continuing into the Annapurna Sanctuary to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m. Mountains surround the lodges, and we settle in for the night before the planned helicopter return.
Day 9: Helicopter Flight from Annapurna Base Camp to Pokhara
Morning helicopter flight from ABC to Pokhara • Overnight: Pokhara
If conditions allow, the morning gives you another view of the mountains around Annapurna Base Camp. We then prepare for the helicopter return to Pokhara. The flight is planned for today, with departure determined by weather and the operator’s instructions.
After landing in Pokhara, transfer to your hotel. You have the afternoon free to rest, shower and explore Lakeside, with lunch and dinner at your own expense today.
Day 10: Fly Back to Kathmandu
Domestic flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu • Overnight: Kathmandu
After breakfast in Pokhara, we transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to Kathmandu. The flight replaces the road journey, with departure dependent on weather and operations.
On arrival, transfer to your hotel and use the remaining time for rest or a walk around Thamel. Check your onward travel details and organise your belongings before tomorrow’s departure. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense today.

Your 11-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return ends today. After breakfast, prepare for your onward journey and check your belongings. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a final walk nearby.

Trek Difficulty and Fitness
The route does not require technical climbing skills in suitable conditions, but it involves consecutive walking days and demanding stair sections. You climb from Birethanti towards Ulleri, then continue through hills and valleys to base camp. The helicopter replaces the return descent, not the uphill effort.
Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill regularly with a daypack.
Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.
Altitude and Acclimatisation
This itinerary has no dedicated acclimatisation day. The ascent from Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp brings a substantial gain in sleeping altitude, so your health must guide your progress.
Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. The planned helicopter return must not delay urgent decisions.
Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance
If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.
Arrange insurance covering trekking to at least 4,130 metres, planned helicopter travel, emergency evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s assistance procedure. Carry your policy details and emergency contact number throughout the trek and the flight stages.
Accommodation and Room Facilities
You stay in three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, with breakfast included, and twin-sharing teahouses during the trekking section. Annapurna Base Camp is your highest overnight stop before the helicopter return.
Expect simple rooms and shared bathroom facilities at Deurali and Annapurna Base Camp. Room arrangements and comfort vary between lodges, particularly during busy periods. Nights at base camp can be cold, even during spring and autumn trekking.
Food and Dietary Requirements
Three daily meals are included during the walking approach. Teahouse menus commonly offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and other straightforward meals.
Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain strict requirements clearly, including any concerns about shared cooking equipment.
Drinking Water
Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Stream water and untreated tap water may still contain germs that cause illness.
Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your water-treatment equipment or tablets.
Guide and Porter Support
A trekking guide and one porter for every two trekkers are included. Your porter carries the luggage during the approach. You carry a daypack with daily essentials; confirm how bags return to Pokhara.
Showers, Charging and Communication
Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging may incur personal charges, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet can be unreliable higher in the valley. Carry a power bank and let family know that you may be out of contact during parts of the trek.
Permits and Documents
The ACAP entry permit is included. TIMS registration is also required under Nepal Tourism Board rules; confirm its fee coverage with us. Carry your passport and insurance details. Your Nepal visa is separate from the package.
Flight Delays and Extra Time
The helicopter return and Pokhara–Kathmandu flight depend on weather and operating conditions. Allow extra time before international departure rather than relying on fixed schedules.
Ask about the helicopter’s passenger and luggage allowances before booking. If flights are delayed, our team discusses available options and additional accommodation or transport.
Altitude Profile of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return
The route climbs from Birethanti to Ulleri and Ghorepani, then descends towards Chuile and Lower Sinuwa. The stages gain height through Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp. You sleep at base camp before the planned helicopter return to Pokhara the following morning.

Weather and Best Time for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek Heli Return
Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally the best seasons for this trek and helicopter return. Both offer opportunities for mountain views, although rain, cloud, cold weather and snowfall remain possible. Flight departures still depend on the conditions.
Seasonal Weather Conditions
| Season | Months | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March–May | Days become warmer, with rhododendrons flowering around Ghorepani. March can retain snow near Deurali and base camp. April often offers balanced walking conditions; May can bring haze, cloud and showers that affect mountain flights. |
| Autumn | September–November | Early September can retain monsoon rain. October and November generally offer clearer views after the rains. Mornings and nights become colder at base camp, and helicopter departures remain subject to local weather. |
| Winter | December–February | Cold, shorter daylight and snow or ice make the higher approach more demanding. Snowfall can change the walking schedule and affect helicopter departures. The full programme requires careful planning and flexibility. |
| Monsoon | June–August, sometimes extending into September | Rain can make forest trails wet and slippery, while cloud hides the mountains. Landslides may affect road access. Poor visibility and unsettled weather can disrupt both the helicopter return and the Kathmandu flight. |
Mountain weather can change rapidly. Helicopter flights require minimum visibility and safe wind conditions in the sanctuary.
How Weather Changes Along the Route
Walking around Ulleri and the villages can feel warm in sunshine. Conditions become cooler through Ghorepani and cold around Deurali and Annapurna Base Camp, especially before sunrise and after sunset.
Even during spring and autumn, nights at base camp can fall below freezing. Snow, wind or poor visibility may affect the higher trail and helicopter operations. Carry warm layers and weather protection, and allow flexibility around the return flight.
Which Season Should You Choose?
Choose spring if you would enjoy flowering forests around Ghorepani on the approach. Choose autumn, particularly October or November, if mountain visibility is your priority. Winter and monsoon require greater flexibility around the higher trail, helicopter return and onward flight.
