Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Overview

Our nine-day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek follows forest and village trails in Nepal’s Annapurna foothills. The four walking days link Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani and Ghandruk, with an early hike to Poon Hill at 3,210 m. Clear mornings offer views across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges before you return to Ghorepani and continue through the forest.

After arriving in Kathmandu, you travel to Pokhara by tourist bus and stay there before the trek begins. A drive to Birethanti brings you to the walking start. Village paths and terraced farmland lead through Tikhedhunga towards Ulleri, where a long stone staircase makes the climb demanding. This first walking day introduces the sustained uphill effort, teahouse accommodation and hillside scenery that shape the days ahead in Annapurna.

From Ulleri, the trail continues through rhododendron and oak forest to Ghorepani. The village is your highest overnight stop, around 2,874 m, and the base for the following morning’s sunrise hike. Poon Hill is reached on foot before breakfast, with warm layers and a headlamp useful for the dark steps and cold wait above Ghorepani.

After returning from Poon Hill, you continue through forest towards Tadapani. This stage combines climbs and descents, followed the next day by a shorter walk to Ghandruk. Stone houses, terraced hillsides and Gurung community life give the village its character. Clear weather can reveal Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre above the surrounding hills, before the trekking section finishes at Ghandruk.

Four mountain nights and four city hotel nights complete the programme. You return to Kathmandu by tourist bus on Day 8, staying overnight before departure on Day 9.

After reaching Pokhara, check into your hotel and rest before tomorrow’s walk. If time allows, explore Lakeside or take a stroll beside Phewa Lake, then organise your luggage for the first trekking day in the hills.

After breakfast, we drive from Pokhara to Birethanti, where the trek begins. The trail follows village paths and terraced farmland through Tikhedhunga before climbing the steps to Ulleri.

The stone staircase above Tikhedhunga makes this first walking day demanding, so choose a pace you can maintain and take breaks when needed. Hillside homes and cultivated terraces line the approach. Keep water and weather protection accessible in your daypack. At Ulleri, settle into the teahouse and rest before tomorrow’s walk through the forest towards Ghorepani.

Day 4: Trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani

Rhododendron Forest Trail — Ghorepani, around 2,874 m — 4–5 Hours, 10 km

Spring can bring rhododendron flowers along suitable forest sections, while mountain visibility depends on cloud. Ghorepani, around 2,874 m, is the highest overnight stop on the confirmed route. After checking into the teahouse, rest your legs and prepare warm layers and your headlamp for tomorrow’s early climb to Poon Hill.

We leave Ghorepani before sunrise and climb the stone steps to Poon Hill. Bring a headlamp for the dark trail and warm clothing for the wait at the viewpoint.

At 3,210 m, Poon Hill looks across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Clear mornings can reveal Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre as sunlight reaches the peaks. Cloud may hide the peaks, and visibility can change.

After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, we continue through forest towards Tadapani. The route combines climbs and descents before reaching our teahouse for the night after trekking.

We leave Tadapani and descend through forest towards Ghandruk. The walk is shorter than yesterday’s sunrise stage, although uneven paths and downhill steps require care. As the trees open, cultivated terraces and village houses appear.

Ghandruk is a Gurung village with stone houses and paths overlooking the hills. After checking into your lodge, take time to explore streets or enjoy mountain views in clear weather. Ask before photographing residents or entering homes, and respect local customs during your visit.

After breakfast in Ghandruk, we begin the road journey to Pokhara via Birethanti and Nayapul. Terraced hillsides and village areas accompany the drive as we leave the mountain walking route behind.

Road conditions and the vehicle pickup point affect the transfer time. At Birethanti, complete any required exit checks before continuing towards Pokhara. After reaching your hotel, you can rest or walk around Lakeside if time allows. Organise your main luggage and prepare for tomorrow’s tourist bus journey back to Kathmandu.

Read Before You Book

Before choosing this Ghorepani Poon Hill itinerary, consider the steps, forest walks, sunrise start and road journeys. These details help you prepare and decide whether the route suits your fitness and expectations.

If you have any questions or need advice on preparation, feel free to email or WhatsApp us directly.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

1. Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The trek is easy to moderate, with four consecutive walking days on stone steps, forest paths and uneven ground. The staircase to Ulleri requires sustained uphill effort, while the sunrise stage combines an early climb with further trekking. Prepare for consecutive walking days and extended descents.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill regularly with a daypack.

Prepare with regular walks and hill hikes before departure, allowing longer if you have limited walking experience. Include simple strength exercises, practise in your trekking boots and become comfortable descending steps with a daypack before beginning the trek.

2. Altitude and Acclimatisation

Ghorepani, around 2,874 m, is the highest overnight stop before your sunrise hike. Poon Hill reaches 3,210 m during the day, followed by breakfast and onward trekking to Tadapani.

This route stays below Nepal’s high pass and base camp treks, but altitude illness is possible. Tell your guide about headaches, nausea, dizziness or fatigue. Avoid ascent with altitude illness, and descend if symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation. Fitness cannot prevent altitude illness.

3. Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional before booking. Discuss the walking terrain, planned elevations, trekking days and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is recommended and excluded from the price. Choose cover for the full route, including the 3,210 m viewpoint, medical treatment and emergency evacuation in Nepal. Check activity and altitude exclusions, assistance procedures and excess charges. Carry your policy details and contacts.

4. Accommodation and Room Facilities

You stay two nights in Kathmandu and two in Pokhara, plus four mountain nights. Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani and Ghandruk each have one overnight stay in a teahouse along the walking route.

Mountain rooms generally have basic furnishings, and shared bathrooms are common. Facilities differ between lodges and during busy periods. Confirm your room arrangements before departure. Bring warm layers for Ghorepani evenings and personal items for teahouse stays.

5. Food and Dietary Requirements

Days 3–6 include breakfast, lunch and dinner, with seasonal fruit during trekking. Lodge menus commonly include dal bhat, noodles, soups and bread.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain strict requirements clearly, including any concerns about shared cooking equipment.

6. Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Stream water and untreated tap water may still contain germs that cause illness.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your water-treatment equipment or tablets.

7. Guide and Porter Support

A licensed guide and porter support are included. Confirm porter allocation, baggage allowance and solo arrangements before packing. Carry water, weather protection, medicines, valuables and items needed during the walk in your daypack.

8. Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet can be unreliable along forested sections and hills. Carry a power bank and let family know that contact may be limited. Ask your guide about facilities at overnight stops.

9. Permits and Documents

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit is included. Confirm the TIMS arrangement and any Poon Hill entrance charge in your final written quotation. Carry your passport, insurance details and permit copies for checking along the trekking route.

10. Travel Delays and Extra Time

Rain, roadworks and landslides can affect the Kathmandu–Pokhara journey and local transfers. Snow or ice around Ghorepani can also alter walking times and access.

The scheduled return to Kathmandu is on Day 8 before Day 9 departure. Allow flexibility and discuss contingency arrangements if road delays affect travel.

Altitude Profile of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

The overnight route rises from Ulleri to Ghorepani, then descends through Tadapani to Ghandruk. Poon Hill is a daytime hike above Ghorepani, with a return to the village before continuing. City hotel nights in Kathmandu and Pokhara complete the programme around the four trekking nights.

Weather and Best Time for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are preferred seasons for Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Both offer opportunities for mountain views and favourable walking conditions. Cloud, rain, wind and cold mornings can still affect the sunrise hike and forest trails.

Seasonal Weather Conditions

March–May

Spring

Day: 15°C to 20°C (Lower) / 8°C to 14°C (Ghorepani)
Night: 0°C to 5°C

Forest walks become warmer, with rhododendron flowers possible along the Ghorepani and Tadapani trails. Early mornings remain cold. March may retain snow or ice higher up, while later spring can bring haze or afternoon cloud.

September–November

Autumn

Day: 14°C to 18°C (Lower) / 6°C to 12°C (Ghorepani)
Night: -2°C to 4°C

Early September can retain monsoon rain. October and November generally offer clearer mountain views after the rains, with colder mornings as winter approaches. The sunrise outlook still depends on daily cloud and visibility.

December–February

Winter

Day: 8°C to 14°C (Lower) / 2°C to 8°C (Ghorepani)
Night: -6°C to -1°C

Cold mornings, shorter daylight and possible snow or ice can make the steps more demanding. Check current trail and lodge conditions. Bring warm clothing for the viewpoint and teahouse evenings.

June–August, extending into Sept

Monsoon

Day: 18°C to 24°C (Humid / Warm)
Night: 10°C to 14°C

Rain can make stone steps and forest paths slippery, with leeches possible on wooded sections. Cloud often hides the mountain views. Road conditions and landslides can affect access, so allow flexibility around travel and walking plans.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Lower Foothills (Birethanti to Ulleri)

Walks near Birethanti and Ulleri can feel warmer in sunshine, with humid conditions in lower farming terraces.

Alpine Ridges (Ghorepani & Poon Hill)

Ghorepani and the Poon Hill climb are colder, particularly before sunrise or when wind reaches the viewpoint above the forest.

Even in spring and autumn, rain can make stone steps and forest paths slippery. Winter may bring snow or ice around Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Carry warm layers and waterproof clothing, and adjust walking plans when conditions require care.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Choose Spring for Wildflowers

Choose spring for warming days and possible rhododendron flowers between Ulleri, Ghorepani and Tadapani.

Choose Autumn for Pure Clarity

Choose autumn, particularly October or November, if mountain visibility across Annapurna and Dhaulagiri is your priority.

Igloo Himalaya Treks Experience

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek FAQs

General & Route

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience? ∨

Yes, with suitable fitness and preparation. Technical climbing skills are unnecessary, but the stone steps to Ulleri and the sunrise stage require effort. Practise hill walks with a daypack and become comfortable descending steps before beginning this trek.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary? ∨

Poon Hill is the highest planned point at approximately 3,210 metres. You visit for sunrise and return to Ghorepani before continuing to Tadapani. Ghorepani, around 2,874 metres, is the highest confirmed overnight stop on this route.

Is this trek suitable for families with children? ∨

The route can suit prepared families, but suitability depends on each child’s walking ability, health and comfort with early starts. Discuss ages, experience and distances with us before booking, rather than relying on an age range.

Do we stay overnight at Poon Hill? ∨

No. You stay in Ghorepani before the sunrise hike, climb to Poon Hill the next morning, then return for breakfast. The itinerary continues through forest to Tadapani that day. Poon Hill is a viewpoint visit, not a camping night.

How does this trek differ from Mardi Himal trekking? ∨

Poon Hill focuses on forest and village trails with a sunrise viewpoint at 3,210 metres. Mardi Himal climbs onto a higher ridge beneath Machhapuchhre, with a viewpoint or base camp option. Compare the walking effort, altitude and time before choosing.

Can altitude illness affect this trek? ∨

Yes. The route is lower than many high mountain treks, but you sleep around 2,874 metres in Ghorepani and climb to 3,210 metres. Report any symptoms to your guide; fitness does not prevent altitude illness.

Is insurance covering trekking to 3,000 metres sufficient? ∨

No. Poon Hill reaches approximately 3,210 metres, above a 3,000-metre policy limit. Choose insurance covering the full planned route, trekking activity, medical treatment and emergency evacuation in Nepal. Check altitude exclusions and assistance procedures directly with your insurer.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude? ∨

Tell your guide about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend with symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary. The sunrise hike may need to change.

Do I need to carry my main trekking bag? ∨

Porter support is included, but the allocation and baggage allowance need confirming for your group. You carry a daypack with water, warm layers, medicines, valuables and daily essentials. Check the agreed luggage limit before packing.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket? ∨

A sleeping bag and duffel bag are provided and must be returned afterwards. A down jacket is not listed as included, so bring your own warm insulation. Boots, clothing, toiletries and other personal equipment remain your responsibility.

How do we return to Kathmandu after trekking? ∨

We drive from Ghandruk to Pokhara on Day 7, then return to Kathmandu by tourist bus on Day 8. You stay overnight in Kathmandu before Day 9 departure. Road conditions and traffic can affect travel times and arrival.

Can I book as a solo traveller? ∨

Yes. The solo starting rate is from USD 799 per person. Send us your dates to confirm availability and your quotation, including the trekking programme, room arrangements, porter allocation and any supplement for your departure.
