Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

Our twelve-day Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek begins with a public bus journey from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. Walk along the Budhi Gandaki via Jagat, Deng and Namrung before reaching Shyala. Visit Pungyen Monastery on the way to Samagaun, spend an acclimatisation day there, then continue steadily towards Samdo, Dharmasala and the crossing of Larkya La.

The lower approach passes cultivated hillsides, river crossings and forests in Gorkha District. After Jagat and Philim, the route follows the Manaslu Circuit towards Deng rather than entering Tsum Valley. Beyond Namrung, Buddhist prayer walls, village monasteries and stone houses reflect life in the upper Nubri Valley. Pass Lho before reaching Shyala, where clear weather offers views of Manaslu, Himalchuli and the mountains above the surrounding valley settlements.

Day 6 takes the longer route to Samagaun via Pungyen Monastery, around 4,020 metres. The next day includes the planned hike towards Manaslu Base Camp, approximately 4,800 metres, followed by another night in Samagaun. This is a demanding mountain excursion, not a gentle rest walk. The turnaround depends on health, weather and the group’s progress.

The route continues to Samdo and Dharmasala before crossing Larkya La at approximately 5,106 metres. Expect an early start, uneven ground and a long descent to Bhimthang. The final walking stage reaches Tilje, followed by road travel to Besisahar. Day 12 ends in Kathmandu or Pokhara, as agreed. There is no separate Samdo acclimatisation rest day or weather buffer included.

This budget package includes guiding, permits, basic lodge accommodation and scheduled ground travel. Meals, porter service and city hotels cost extra, so compare the complete quotation before booking.

Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary — Day by Day

Our twelve-day itinerary starts with the drive from Kathmandu and ends with a bus journey from Besisahar. Walking times and distances are estimates; weather, repaired trails, road access and group pace can change schedules.

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola

Scenic Drive — Machha Khola (900 m / 2,953 ft) — Approximately 9–10 Hours Bus Drive

Driving time Approximately 9–10 hours by public bus; road damage and traffic may extend the journey
Road distance Approximately 157–165 km, depending on the road and pickup point
Main route Kathmandu → Arughat → Soti Khola → Machha Khola
Overnight altitude 900 m / 2,953 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Machha Khola
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Leave Kathmandu by public bus towards the Budhi Gandaki valley. The route passes cultivated hillsides and roadside settlements before continuing via Arughat and Soti Khola to Machha Khola.

The final road sections can be rough, and repairs or traffic may lengthen the journey. Keep water, snacks and essential documents accessible. On arrival, settle into your teahouse and prepare your daypack for tomorrow’s first walking stage towards Jagat.

Day 2: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat

Trek Stage — Jagat (1,340 m / 4,396 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours; diversions and repaired sections can require longer
Trek distance Approximately 18–22 km; confirm current trail alignment before departure
Main route Machha Khola → Khorlabesi → Tatopani → Dovan → Jagat
Overnight altitude 1,340 m / 4,396 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Jagat
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Follow the Budhi Gandaki towards Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Dovan. Stone steps, bridge crossings and climbs between river sections make this a substantial first walking day before reaching Jagat.

Your guide follows the locally confirmed trail around damaged or repaired sections. Walk carefully near the river, keep clear of pack animals and take breaks during the climbs. Jagat is the main entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area. After document checks, settle into your teahouse and organise sufficient food and water for tomorrow’s long walking stage.

Day 3: Trek from Jagat to Dyang

Trek Stage — Deng (1,860 m / 6,102 ft) — Approximately 7–9 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–9 hours; a long stage with repeated climbs and descents
Trek distance Approximately 20–22 km, depending on the path and lodge location
Main route Jagat → Sirdibas → Philim → Ekle Bhatti → Deng / Dyang
Overnight altitude 1,860 m / 6,102 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Deng, also written Dyang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Continue from Jagat via Sirdibas and Philim, following the Budhi Gandaki into narrower sections of the valley. Forest paths, bridges and village fields accompany the route towards Deng, also written Dyang.

Beyond Philim, remain on the Manaslu Circuit rather than taking the Tsum Valley branch. The day includes sustained effort despite its relatively low finishing altitude. Start early, keep food and water accessible, and allow for local diversions. On reaching Deng, settle into the teahouse after one of the longer stages.

Day 4: Trek from Dyang to Namrung

Trek Stage — Namrung (2,630 m / 8,629 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours, depending on the connecting route and pace
Trek distance Approximately 17–19 km
Main route Deng → Bihi Phedi → Ghap → Namrung
Overnight altitude 2,630 m / 8,629 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Namrung
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Leaving Deng, follow the valley towards Bihi Phedi and Ghap, crossing bridges and passing settlements. The route includes forest paths and a sustained climb before Namrung, where stone buildings and Buddhist features become more noticeable.

The distance does not describe every climb, so keep a steady pace and allow time for breaks. Your guide confirms the connecting path and handles document checks where required. On reaching Namrung, check into your lodge, organise tomorrow’s clothing and rest before continuing higher.

Day 5: Trek from Namrung to Shyala

Trek Stage — Shyala (3,500 m / 11,483 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–9 hours; a long day with a substantial rise in sleeping altitude
Trek distance Approximately 16–18 km, depending on the selected trail and stops
Main route Namrung → Lihi → Sho → Lho → Shyala
Overnight altitude 3,500 m / 11,483 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Shyala
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Walk from Namrung via Lihi, Sho and Lho towards Shyala. The route passes cultivated ground, prayer walls and village houses, with Manaslu becoming visible in suitable weather. Forest sections alternate with more open paths as you gain height.

Lho offers views towards Manaslu when cloud allows. Continue to Shyala for the night. Today brings a substantial increase in sleeping altitude, so report headaches, nausea or tiredness. Rest at the lodge and discuss tomorrow’s monastery route with your guide.

Day 6: Trek from Shyala to Samagaun via Pungyen Monastery

Monastery Trek — Samagaun (3,530 m / 11,581 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours via Pungyen Gompa (4,020 m)

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours; weather, monastery access and pace affect timing
Trek distance Approximately 15–17 km, including the monastery detour
Main route Shyala → Pungyen Monastery → Samagaun
Highest planned visit Pungyen Monastery, approximately 4,020 m / 13,189 ft
Overnight altitude Samagaun, 3,530 m / 11,581 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Samagaun; first of two nights
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Leave Shyala for the longer approach to Samagaun via Pungyen Monastery. The path climbs away from the direct village route, crossing open ground beneath Manaslu’s eastern side. This detour adds time and height before the descent towards Samagaun.

If the monastery is open, follow local visiting customs and ask before photographing religious interiors. Mountain visibility depends on weather. After the visit, descend to Samagaun and settle into your teahouse. We spend two nights here before continuing towards Samdo.

Day 7: Samagaun Acclimatisation and Manaslu Base Camp Hike

Acclimatisation — Samagaun (3,530 m / 11,581 ft) — Approximately 7–9 Hours Excursion towards MBC (4,800 m)

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours return for the full base camp hike; allow longer if needed
Hike distance Approximately 12–14 km return, depending on the turnaround point
Highest planned visit Manaslu Base Camp, approximately 4,800 m / 15,748 ft; turnaround adjusted to health and conditions
Overnight altitude Samagaun, 3,530 m / 11,581 ft
Accommodation Same teahouse in Samagaun; no base camp overnight
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Today’s planned excursion climbs towards Manaslu Base Camp before returning to Samagaun. The hike involves substantial uphill walking. Turn around earlier if weather, health or progress require it; reaching base camp remains a secondary goal.

This is an active acclimatisation day, not a complete rest day. Carry warm clothing, water and food, and report symptoms immediately. A shorter walk may be needed for safety. Return to Samagaun for another night before continuing towards Samdo tomorrow.

Day 8: Trek from Samagaun to Samdo

Trek Stage — Samdo (3,875 m / 12,713 ft) — Approximately 4–5 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on pace and conditions
Trek distance Approximately 8–9 km
Main route Samagaun → upper Budhi Gandaki valley → Samdo
Overnight altitude 3,875 m / 12,713 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Samdo
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Leave Samagaun and follow the upper Budhi Gandaki valley towards Samdo. The route crosses increasingly open ground, with fewer trees and views towards surrounding mountains when skies allow. Although today is shorter, the altitude requires steady, unhurried walking.

Samdo is the last permanent village before Dharmasala and Larkya La. Settle into the teahouse, keep warm and organise your equipment. There is no additional acclimatisation night here in this itinerary, so discuss how you feel before continuing higher tomorrow.

Day 9: Trek to Dharmasala / Larkya La Phedi

Trek Stage — Dharmasala (4,460 m / 14,633 ft) — Approximately 4–5 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours; altitude, weather and group pace affect timing
Trek distance Approximately 6–9 km, depending on the trail and lodge position
Main route Samdo → Larkya Bazaar area → Dharmasala / Larkya Phedi
Overnight altitude 4,460 m / 14,633 ft
Accommodation Basic lodge at Dharmasala; shared rooms and limited facilities
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Continue from Samdo towards Dharmasala, called Larkya Phedi. The trail climbs across open mountain ground, with rocky sections and colder conditions as you approach the lodge before the pass.

This is the highest overnight stop, at approximately 4,460 metres. Facilities are limited and rooms may be shared with trekkers. Keep the afternoon gentle and tell your guide about any symptoms before making plans for tomorrow.

Prepare your headlamp, layers, gloves, water and food for an early start. Check the pass conditions and traction equipment with your guide before resting for the night.

Day 10: Cross Larkya La and Descend to Bhimthang

Pass Crossing — Bhimthang (3,590 m / 11,778 ft) — Approximately 8–10 Hours via Larkya La (5,106 m)

Walking time Approximately 8–12 hours; snow, ice and pace can extend this demanding day
Total trek distance Approximately 16–25 km; published route measurements vary substantially
Main route Dharmasala → Larkya La Pass → Bhimthang
Highest point Larkya La Pass, approximately 5,106 m / 16,752 ft
Overnight altitude Bhimthang, approximately 3,720 m / 12,205 ft
Accommodation Basic teahouse in Bhimthang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Make an early start from Dharmasala for Larkya La. The route crosses rocky ground and may hold snow or ice, making progress slow at altitude. Follow the guide’s decisions on footing, equipment and whether conditions allow the crossing to continue.

At approximately 5,106 metres, Larkya La is the highest point of the itinerary. Clear weather can reveal Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal and nearby peaks. The long descent to Bhimthang requires continued care, particularly on steep or icy sections. Rest after reaching the lower teahouse.

Day 11: Trek from Bhimthang to Tilje and Drive to Besisahar

Descent & Drive — Besisahar (760 m / 2,493 ft) — Approximately 5–7 Hours Walk + 2–3 Hours Drive

Walking time Approximately 5–7 hours; allow longer according to pace and trail conditions
Trek distance Approximately 15–25 km; confirm the current trail and vehicle pickup point
Driving time Approximately 3–5 hours after walking; road access can change
Road distance Approximately 40–55 km from the Tilje / Dharapani area to Besisahar
Main route Bhimthang → Karche → Gho → Tilje; road journey via Dharapani to Besisahar
Overnight altitude Besisahar, approximately 760 m / 2,493 ft; Tilje is approximately 2,300 m / 7,546 ft
Accommodation Basic lodge in Besisahar; confirm the final night’s coverage when booking
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Descend from Bhimthang towards Karche and Gho, following the Dudh Khola valley towards Tilje. Forests return as the route loses height, although some climbs remain before the walking finishes.

This is a long combined walking and driving day. Vehicle access near Tilje depends on the road, so confirm the pickup point before leaving Bhimthang. Continue by shared transport via Dharapani to Besisahar, allowing for rough sections and possible delays. Check into the lodge and confirm tomorrow’s final bus destination.

Day 12: Local Bus to Kathmandu or Pokhara

Return Journey — Kathmandu / Pokhara (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) — Approximately 7–9 Hours Bus Journey

Driving time Kathmandu: approximately 7–9 hours; Pokhara: approximately 4–6 hours; delays possible
Road distance Kathmandu: approximately 170–180 km; Pokhara: approximately 105–115 km
Main route Besisahar → Dumre → Kathmandu or Pokhara; one destination agreed before booking
Destination altitude Kathmandu: 1,400 m / 4,593 ft; Pokhara: approximately 822 m / 2,697 ft
Accommodation No hotel night included after the bus journey
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner purchased separately; no meal plan included

Leave Besisahar by local bus for your agreed destination, Kathmandu or Pokhara. The road follows the Marsyangdi valley towards Dumre before joining the highway in the chosen direction.

Travel time depends on traffic, road works and local bus stops. The package ends with the agreed bus journey, not an international airport transfer. Arrange your city hotel separately and allow extra time before an onward flight or commitment.

Read Before You Book

Before booking your Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek, consider the long stages, high altitude and basic lodge facilities. Check the included services and extra spending so you can prepare for this demanding itinerary.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

This twelve-day circuit requires fitness for long walking days, steep paths, uneven ground and a high pass. Several lower stages take seven to nine hours. The base camp hike and Larkya La crossing add demanding days at altitude, followed by a descent and final road journeys.

Previous multi-day hiking experience is recommended. Build endurance beforehand and become comfortable with repeated climbs, descents and walking with your expected luggage load.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if your fitness is limited. Combine walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise wearing your trekking boots and carrying the load you expect if travelling without a porter.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Samagaun has an acclimatisation day, but the full base camp hike is strenuous. The schedule has one Samdo night and includes substantial sleeping-height gains. Review its suitability before booking.

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with altitude symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent assistance. The base camp hike and pass crossing remain secondary to your health.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is compulsory for this package. Confirm cover for all scheduled trekking to approximately 5,106 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check activity exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s assistance procedures. Carry your policy details and emergency contact information.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

Accommodation is in basic teahouses along the route, with a lodge night in Besisahar. Confirm room sharing and that night’s coverage before booking. Kathmandu and Pokhara hotels are outside this package.

Facilities become simpler at Samdo and Dharmasala, where rooms may be shared with trekkers. Expect cold bedrooms, basic bedding and shared bathrooms. Attached bathrooms, electricity, hot showers and reliable internet are not guaranteed benefits at these stops.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Meals cost extra. Lodges commonly serve dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and eggs. Seasonal fruit is purchased separately, subject to local availability.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain requirements clearly, including concerns about ingredients and shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Arrangements

A licensed guide accompanies the route. Porter assistance and insurance cost extra unless added. Confirm charges, luggage allowance and working arrangements. Without that service, you carry your main bag and daily essentials yourself.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi, laundry and charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mountain phone reception and internet can be unreliable, particularly around Samdo and Dharmasala. Carry a charged power bank and headlamp, and tell family that there may be periods without contact during the journey.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Manaslu restricted-area permit, Manaslu Conservation Area entry and Annapurna Conservation Area entry for the agreed circuit. Confirm applicable registrations and processing dates. Carry your passport, valid visa, insurance details and copies of documents.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Flood damage, road works and landslides can affect the approach and the return jeep. Snow or ice may delay the crossing of Larkya La.

No buffer day is included. Allow extra time before international flights; changes, extra accommodation, meals and alternative transport outside the programme can cost extra.

Altitude Profile of the Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek

Sleeping elevations rise from Machha Khola via Jagat, Deng, Namrung and Shyala to Samagaun. After two nights, continue to Samdo and Dharmasala, the highest overnight stop. Pungyen Monastery, Manaslu Base Camp and Larkya La are daytime visits. Descend to Bhimthang after crossing the high pass.

Weather and Best Time for the Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally suit the Manaslu Circuit. Both offer opportunities for mountain views, although snow, ice, cloud and cold remain possible around Larkya La. Confirm trail repairs, lodge availability and pass conditions before choosing dates.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Lower trails become warmer, with possible rhododendron flowers in forested sections. March can retain winter snow near the pass. April and May still need warm clothing and current checks for the base camp hike and Larkya La.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain and damaged access. October and November often offer clearer mountain views, with colder nights later in the season. Check repaired trails, vehicle access and lodge availability before departure.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Severe cold, snow, ice and shorter daylight can prevent the pass crossing. High lodges may close. This itinerary should not be treated as a guaranteed year-round departure; local conditions decide whether it can operate.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Heavy rain can damage roads, bridges and lower trails. Landslides, swollen rivers and cloud can disrupt the programme. The circuit’s higher valleys do not remove the weather problems on its approach and exit roads.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Walking near Machha Khola and Jagat can feel warm and humid. Nights become colder towards Shyala, Samagaun, Samdo and Dharmasala, before dawn and after sunset, with wind increasing the chill.

Even in spring and autumn, nights at higher lodges can fall below freezing. The base camp hike and pass crossing may feel colder in wind. Carry warm layers, gloves and weather protection, and check conditions before leaving each lodge.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for warmer days and flowering lower forests. Choose October or November for mountain views after the rains.

Winter snow can block the pass, while monsoon rain can damage roads and bridges. Check conditions locally before planning either season.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Igloo Himalaya Treks Experience

Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek FAQs

Find clear answers regarding Larkya La crossing, budget arrangements, guide support, and daily walking stages for this 12-day Himalayan trek.

Route & Itinerary

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Previous multi-day hiking experience is recommended for this compact itinerary. Expect long stages, steep paths, basic lodges and demanding walking at altitude. First-time trekkers should build endurance and discuss whether a longer programme would suit their experience better.

Do we sleep at Manaslu Base Camp?

No. Day 7 is a return hike from Samagaun towards Manaslu Base Camp, followed by another night in the village. The ascent is strenuous and depends on health and conditions. There is no overnight camp or climbing programme included.

Are acclimatisation days complete rest days?

No. Day 7 includes the planned Manaslu Base Camp hike and another night in Samagaun. The full walk is demanding, so a shorter turnaround may be needed. There is no extra acclimatisation day at Samdo.

Does this package include arrival and international departure days?

No. Day 1 is the road departure from Kathmandu, and Day 12 is the bus journey to Kathmandu or Pokhara. Arrange an earlier arrival for preparation and permits. City hotels, airport transfers and international departure arrangements are outside this package.

Are meals included in this budget trekking package?

No. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are purchased separately unless your quotation expressly includes them. Carry enough cash for lodge meals, drinks and snacks. Seasonal fruit is an extra when available, rather than an automatic daily inclusion.

Is porter assistance included with this Manaslu Circuit trek?

No. A licensed guide is included, while porter assistance and insurance cost extra unless added to your quotation. Confirm charges and luggage allowances before departure. Without a porter, you carry your main bag and daypack.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

A sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag are included in this package. Confirm suitability, collection and return arrangements before departure. Bring your personal boots, clothing, medicines, toiletries and electronics, and keep daily essentials in your daypack.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

You can enquire about a guided solo booking or joining a group. Restricted-area access requires agency arrangements and a licensed guide. The USD 525 starting rate has no published group size, so request your quotation.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

Larkya La Pass, approximately 5,106 metres, is the highest planned point. Dharmasala, around 4,460 metres, is the highest overnight stop. The planned base camp hike reaches approximately 4,800 metres before returning to Samagaun for another night.

Is insurance covering trekking to 5,000 metres sufficient?

A 5,000-metre limit falls below Larkya La at approximately 5,106 metres. Ask your insurer to confirm cover for the full itinerary, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, excess charges and assistance procedures before departure.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness helps with long walking days but does not prevent altitude illness. This itinerary includes sleeping-height gains and a demanding base camp hike. Report symptoms immediately, adjust the plan when needed and avoid assuming that fitness guarantees acclimatisation.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent assistance and an immediate descent.
