14-Day Tsum Valley Trek Overview

Our fourteen-day Tsum Valley Trek follows the Budhi Gandaki approach before turning towards the villages of Tsum. After preparing in Kathmandu, drive to Machha Khola and walk via Jagat, Lokpa, Chumling and Chhekamparo to Nile. A day hike reaches Mu Gompa, followed by a return along the same valley and road travel back to Kathmandu.

Tsum lies in the northeastern part of the Manaslu Conservation Area, in Gorkha District. The lower approach follows river paths, village farmland and forested hillsides, with bridge crossings and repeated climbs. Beyond Lokpa, the route enters the Syar Khola valley and continues towards Chumling. Stone houses, Buddhist prayer walls and village monasteries become part of the walking journey as the trail gains height towards the upper Tsum settlements.

Chhekamparo stands above the lower forest, with cultivated fields and views towards surrounding mountains when weather allows. Continue to Nile, where you spend two nights. Mu Gompa, around 3,700 metres, is visited during the following day’s hike. The monastery is the outward destination. After visiting, return to Nile for a second night in the teahouse.

This route focuses on villages and monasteries, with no high pass crossing in the scheduled programme. You still need fitness for consecutive walking days, steep steps, uneven paths and long descents. There is no dedicated acclimatisation rest day. Discuss how you feel as the route rises, and keep the monastery hike secondary to your health, weather and local trail conditions.

You stay in basic teahouses and a Kathmandu hotel. The fourteen-day programme covers preparation, the walking journey, road travel and departure, with porter support available at extra cost.

Ask about lodge facilities, food, luggage allowances and communication. Sightseeing is not part of today’s scheduled programme; use any free time to rest before tomorrow’s road journey north.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola

Scenic Drive — Machha Khola (900 m / 2,953 ft) — Approximately 7–9 Hours Drive

Driving time Approximately 7–9 hours; bus travel, rough roads and traffic can take longer
Road distance Approximately 165 km; pickup point and chosen road affect the distance
Main route Kathmandu → Arughat → Soti Khola → Machha Khola
Overnight altitude 900 m / 2,953 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Machha Khola; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Hotel breakfast; road-day lunch and dinner as quoted

We leave Kathmandu by road towards the Budhi Gandaki valley. The journey passes hill settlements and cultivated slopes before continuing via Arughat and Soti Khola to Machha Khola.

Paved roads give way to rougher sections nearer the trailhead. Travel time depends on the vehicle, traffic, ongoing repairs and changing local access. The final pickup and drop-off arrangements are checked before departure. On reaching Machha Khola, settle into the local teahouse, organise your daypack and prepare for the first walking stage towards Jagat tomorrow morning.

Day 4: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat

Trek Stage — Jagat (1,340 m / 4,396 ft) — Approximately 6–7 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 6–8 hours; bridge diversions and group pace can extend the day
Trek distance Approximately 18–22 km, depending on current trail alignment
Main route Machha Khola → Khorlabesi → Tatopani → Dovan → Jagat
Overnight altitude 1,340 m / 4,396 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Jagat; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Our first trekking day follows the Budhi Gandaki towards Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Dovan. Bridge crossings, stone steps and repeated uphill and downhill sections lead towards Jagat, with the guide following the locally confirmed route.

This is a substantial walking day despite the low overnight altitude. Keep water accessible, and take care near river crossings or repaired sections. Jagat is an entry point to the conservation area. After the permit checks, check into your teahouse and rest.

Day 5: Trek from Jagat to Lokpa

Trek Stage — Lokpa (2,040 m / 6,693 ft) — Approximately 6–7 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours; local trail conditions can require longer
Trek distance Approximately 16–17 km, depending on the route and lodge location
Main route Jagat → Sirdibas → Philim → Lokpa
Overnight altitude 2,040 m / 6,693 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Lokpa; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We continue from Jagat towards Sirdibas and Philim, passing fields and forested slopes. Beyond Philim, follow the approach towards Lokpa, where the route turns away from the main Manaslu Circuit direction.

The day combines climbs, descents and river crossings rather than a continuous uphill path. Your guide handles document checks and confirms the next trail section. Lokpa has basic lodge facilities, so keep expectations simple. After settling in, rest and prepare for tomorrow’s walk into the lower Tsum Valley towards Chumling.

Day 6: Trek from Lokpa to Chumling

Trek Stage — Chumling (2,386 m / 7,828 ft) — Approximately 4–5 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 4–6 hours, depending on the connecting trail and conditions
Trek distance Approximately 6–11 km; connecting trails and lodge positions affect the distance
Main route Lokpa → Syar Khola valley → Chumling
Overnight altitude 2,386 m / 7,828 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Chumling; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Leaving Lokpa, we follow the locally confirmed connecting trail into the Syar Khola valley. Forest paths, bridge crossings and steep sections require steady footing as the route approaches Chumling and the lower villages of Tsum.

The shorter distance still includes steep climbs and descents between village stops. Follow the guide on narrow or uneven sections and keep clear of pack animals. Chumling’s stone houses and Buddhist features reflect local building styles and traditions. Settle into your teahouse and rest.

Day 7: Trek from Chumling to Chhekamparo

Trek Stage — Chhekampar (3,031 m / 9,944 ft) — Approximately 5–6 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 5–7 hours; allow time for climbs and breaks
Trek distance Approximately 9–10 km, depending on lodge positions and trail alignment
Main route Chumling → Renjam and Gho area → Chhekamparo
Overnight altitude 3,031 m / 9,944 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Chhekamparo; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We leave Chumling and climb towards the upper Tsum settlements, passing the Renjam and Gho area along the way. Woodland gradually gives way to open slopes, cultivated ground and village buildings as we approach Chhekamparo.

Today brings a gain in sleeping altitude, so keep a steady pace and report headaches, nausea or unusual tiredness. Prayer walls and chortens reflect the valley’s Buddhist traditions. After reaching Chhekamparo, settle into the lodge and keep the afternoon gentle.

Day 8: Trek from Chhekamparo to Nile

Trek Stage — Nile (3,361 m / 11,027 ft) — Approximately 4–5 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours; visits and trail conditions can extend this
Trek distance Approximately 9–11 km, depending on the selected path and stops
Main route Chhekamparo → upper Tsum villages → Nile
Overnight altitude 3,361 m / 11,027 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Nile; first of two nights
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Continue along the upper valley towards Nile, passing cultivated fields, Buddhist prayer walls and settlements. The forested approach is behind us, with more open walking and mountain views where cloud allows. Take time as the path gains height.

Nile is your highest planned overnight stop. We spend two nights here, using the village as a base for tomorrow’s hike to Mu Gompa. After checking into the teahouse, rest, prepare warm clothing and discuss tomorrow’s plan with your guide.

Day 9: Hike to Mu Gompa and Return to Nile

Monastery Hike — Mu Gompa (3,700 m / 12,139 ft) — Approximately 4–5 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours return; monastery visits, weather and pace affect timing
Hike distance Approximately 8 km return, depending on the selected path
Highest planned point Mu Gompa, approximately 3,700 m / 12,139 ft
Overnight altitude Nile, 3,361 m / 11,027 ft
Accommodation Same teahouse in Nile; no overnight stay at Mu Gompa
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We leave Nile for Mu Gompa, the highest point of the trek. Open slopes and rocky paths lead towards the monastery, with the turnaround dependent on health and conditions.

If the monastery is open, your guide explains visiting customs before you enter. Ask before photographing people or religious interiors, and respect any ceremonies taking place. Views along the upper valley depend on cloud and visibility.

After the visit, return along the trail to Nile. Sleeping lower than the monastery keeps tonight’s stop unchanged, with time to rest before the longer return stage.

Day 10: Trek from Nile to Chumling

Trek Stage — Chumling (2,386 m / 7,828 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–8 hours; a long return stage with climbs as well as descents
Trek distance Approximately 18–21 km, depending on lodge positions and the selected route
Main route Nile → Chhekamparo → Chumling
Overnight altitude 2,386 m / 7,828 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Chumling; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We retrace the upper valley from Nile towards Chhekamparo and continue down to Chumling. The familiar villages, cultivated fields and Buddhist features appear along the return route, with greener slopes and forests becoming more common again as we lose height.

This is a long walking day, even though tonight’s lodge is lower. Stone steps, uneven ground and descents require care. Take breaks and keep water accessible. On arrival in Chumling, settle into the teahouse, organise your belongings and rest before continuing towards Philim tomorrow.

Day 11: Trek from Chumling to Philim

Trek Stage — Philim (1,570 m / 5,151 ft) — Approximately 6–7 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 6–8 hours; the confirmed connecting trail determines timing
Trek distance Approximately 14–20 km; confirm the selected connecting trail before departure
Main route Chumling → Lokpa → Philim
Overnight altitude 1,570 m / 5,151 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Philim; room arrangements as confirmed
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We leave Chumling and retrace the trail towards Lokpa. Forest paths and river crossings mark the journey out of Tsum before continuing towards Philim on the Budhi Gandaki approach.

The route combines downhill sections with climbs, so allow for a full walking day. Your guide checks bridge crossings and diversions before the group proceeds. Philim is a Gurung village with cultivated fields and lodge accommodation. After reaching the teahouse, rest and prepare for tomorrow’s long stage towards Machha Khola.

Day 12: Trek from Philim to Machha Khola

Trek Stage — Machha Khola (900 m / 2,953 ft) — Approximately 7–8 Hours Walk

Walking time Approximately 7–9 hours; repaired sections, diversions and pace can extend the stage
Trek distance Approximately 23–26 km; confirm the current trail before departure
Main route Philim → Sirdibas → Jagat → Dovan → Tatopani → Khorlabesi → Machha Khola
Overnight altitude 900 m / 2,953 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Machha Khola; final night on the trekking route
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Our final walking day follows the Budhi Gandaki via Jagat, Dovan, Tatopani and Khorlabesi to Machha Khola. This long stage requires an early start, regular breaks, careful footing and steady progress.

Follow the confirmed route, particularly near repaired bridges and narrow river sections. The day includes uphill walking among the descents. Keep food and water accessible, and discuss timing before leaving Philim. Once in Machha Khola, check into the lodge and confirm transport to Kathmandu. Rest after the final trekking stage.

Day 13: Drive from Machha Khola to Kathmandu

Scenic Drive — Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) — Approximately 7–9 Hours Drive

Driving time Approximately 7–9 hours; road repairs, traffic and vehicle type affect timing
Road distance Approximately 165 km, depending on routing and the final drop-off point
Main route Machha Khola → Soti Khola → Arughat → Kathmandu
Overnight altitude 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu; room sharing as confirmed
Meals Breakfast; other road-day meals as quoted; Kathmandu lunch and dinner excluded

After breakfast, we leave Machha Khola by prearranged road transport. The journey returns via Soti Khola and Arughat, then continues along the hill roads and highway towards Kathmandu.

Traffic, rough roads and repair work can extend the journey. In Kathmandu, check into your hotel and rest. Confirm tomorrow’s airport transfer time, return borrowed trekking equipment as agreed and prepare documents and luggage for the departure from Nepal.

Read Before You Book

Before booking your fourteen-day Tsum Valley Trek, consider the walking stages, altitude and basic lodge facilities. These details help you prepare, understand the included services and decide whether this itinerary suits you.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The Tsum Valley Trek requires fitness for consecutive walking days, steep steps and uneven paths. Several stages take five to seven hours, while the return towards Machha Khola can be longer. There is no high pass crossing, but the walking remains demanding, particularly on the return.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build their endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill with a daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Overnight stops rise to Nile, with Mu Gompa visited during the day. No dedicated acclimatisation rest day is included. Take the ascent steadily and report symptoms before continuing higher.

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with symptoms of altitude illness, including on the Mu Gompa hike. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descend. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent help.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your route, accommodation and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is compulsory for this package. Confirm cover for the complete route to approximately 3,700 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and necessary medical treatment in Nepal. Check activity exclusions, excess charges and emergency assistance procedures. Carry your policy details and emergency contact information.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

You stay in a three-star hotel in Kathmandu and teahouses while trekking. Confirm room sharing before departure. Mountain bathrooms are commonly shared, and attached facilities are not promised at every village.

Rooms at settlements can be cold, with simple bedding and limited services. Expect fewer facilities at Nile than in Kathmandu. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, laundry and device charging cost extra, and may not be available during your stay.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek, with fruit after dinner. Teahouse menus offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes and soups.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain strict requirements clearly, including any concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Arrangements

A licensed, English-speaking guide accompanies the route. Porter service costs extra and may be shared between two trekkers. Confirm charges and luggage allowances before departure; keep your daily essentials and valuables with you.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and charging are extra services, with availability varying between lodges. Electricity may be limited or solar-powered, and phone reception can be unreliable. Carry a charged power bank and headlamp, and let family know that you may be out of contact during the trek.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Tsum Valley restricted-area permit and Manaslu Conservation Area entry for the agreed itinerary. A licensed guide accompanies the trek. Confirm current registration requirements, and carry your passport, visa details, permits and insurance documents.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Flood damage, bridge repairs, landslides and road works can alter access to Machha Khola and Tsum. Confirm vehicle access and connecting paths before departure.

There is no buffer day after the return drive. Allow extra time before international departure; accommodation or transport outside the programme may cost extra.

Altitude Profile of the 14-Day Tsum Valley Trek

The approach starts at Machha Khola, below Kathmandu. Overnight stops rise via Jagat, Lokpa, Chumling and Chhekamparo to Nile, the highest place you sleep. Mu Gompa is visited during the day before returning to Nile. The table separates overnight elevations from the higher monastery visit.

Weather and Best Time for the 14-Day Tsum Valley Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally suit the Tsum Valley Trek. Both offer opportunities for mountain views and village walking, although cold, rain, cloud and snowfall remain possible. Confirm the lower approach, bridges and accommodation before choosing dates.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Lower trails warm gradually, with possible flowers in forested areas. March can retain cold and snow higher up, while May brings warmer walking and possible afternoon cloud. Check conditions around Nile and Mu Gompa.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can still bring monsoon rain. October and November often offer clearer mountain views, with colder mornings and nights later in the season. Confirm roads, bridges and repaired trail sections after the rains.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Cold nights, shorter daylight and possible snow or ice make upper-valley walking more demanding. Some lodges may close. Confirm accommodation and access before planning the Mu Gompa visit.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Rain can disrupt roads, damage bridges and make river paths slippery. Cloud may hide mountain views. The lower Budhi Gandaki approach needs particular attention, with local access checks before departure.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Walking near Machha Khola and Jagat can feel warm and humid. Nights become colder as you climb towards Chhekamparo and Nile, with wind adding to the chill around Mu Gompa.

During spring and autumn, nights in upper Tsum can fall below freezing. The Mu Gompa hike may feel colder in wind or snow. Carry warm layers and waterproof clothing, and check conditions before leaving Nile for the monastery visit.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for warming days and flowers along the forested approach. Choose October or November for clearer mountain views after the rains.

Winter and monsoon need flexibility because cold, snow, rain, river levels and road damage can affect the route.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Tsum Valley Trek FAQs

Find clear answers regarding sacred valley trails, restricted-area permits, monastery visits, and teahouse accommodation for this 14-day trekking journey.

Experience & Monasteries

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Previous hiking experience helps, although technical climbing skills are unnecessary. Prepare for consecutive walking days, steep paths and basic lodges. First-time trekkers should build endurance beforehand and discuss the long return stages, luggage arrangements and facilities before booking.

Does this itinerary cross the Larkya La Pass?

No. This route turns towards Tsum Valley at Lokpa, visits Mu Gompa and returns along the valley. Larkya La belongs to the Manaslu Circuit, which continues towards Samagaun and Samdo before crossing the pass to Bimthang.

Do we sleep at Mu Gompa monastery?

No. We visit Mu Gompa during the day and return to the same teahouse in Nile. This keeps your overnight stop at approximately 3,361 metres. The following morning, begin the longer return walk down the valley towards Chumling village.

How does this trek differ from the Manaslu Circuit?

This trek visits Tsum’s villages and Mu Gompa, returning along the valley. The Manaslu Circuit continues towards Samagaun and crosses Larkya La before descending to Bimthang. The combined Manaslu Tsum Valley itinerary includes both sections and requires a longer programme.

Are there any dedicated acclimatisation days?

No separate acclimatisation rest day is scheduled. Day 9 combines the Mu Gompa hike with another night at Nile. Walk steadily as sleeping altitude rises, report symptoms immediately and discuss necessary changes with your guide.

Is porter support included in this Tsum Valley package?

No. A guide is included, but porter assistance is extra and can be shared between two trekkers. Ask for the porter price and luggage allowance before booking. Without this service, you carry your main luggage.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

We supply a sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel for use during the trek. Check suitability before departure and confirm return arrangements. Bring your boots, clothing, toiletries, personal medicines and electronics, keeping daily essentials in your daypack.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

Solo travellers can enquire at the starting rate of USD 1,145. We confirm permit arrangements, guide availability and the final quotation before booking. A solo booking does not mean unguided trekking or automatic permit approval.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

The highest planned visit is Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 metres. Nile, around 3,361 metres, is your highest overnight stop. You spend two nights there, returning after the monastery hike rather than sleeping at Mu Gompa.

Is insurance covering trekking to 3,500 metres sufficient?

A 3,500-metre limit falls below Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 metres. Ask your insurer to confirm cover for the itinerary, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check activity exclusions, excess charges and assistance procedures before departure.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness helps with walking but does not prevent altitude illness. The route rises above 3,000 metres at Chhekamparo and continues towards Nile and Mu Gompa. Report symptoms immediately and review ascent plans rather than assuming fitness offers protection.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with altitude symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent help and immediate descent.
