Key Trip Facts
Rara Lake Jeep Tour Overview
Our Rara Lake Jeep Tour follows a seven-day overland itinerary from Kathmandu into Karnali, with a full exploration day at the lake. You travel via Kohalpur and Manma, then drive towards Talcha before completing the final approach on foot. Rara lies at approximately 2,990 m / 9,810 ft inside Rara National Park in western Nepal.
Road travel occupies most of this seven-day holiday. Start with a long drive to Kohalpur, then continue towards Manma in Kalikot. Beyond the lower roads, expect bends, uneven surfaces and slower progress. The parking point depends on access and conditions, so confirm the walking approach and its timing before departure. The jeep connects your overnight stops, with the last section to Rara completed on foot from the roadhead.
At Rara, the programme leaves Day 4 for lakeshore walks, photography and time outdoors. Forest surrounds parts of the lake, and birds may be seen near the water. Your walking distance can reflect the weather and your energy. An excursion to Murma Top is optional and needs agreement; it is not required by the itinerary.
The return retraces the approach, with a walk back to the jeep followed by overnight stops in Manma and Kohalpur. Although the journey is by vehicle, you should be comfortable with consecutive driving days and uneven paths. Lake accommodation is simpler than city hotels. Confirm room arrangements, the meal plan, guiding support and permit coverage in your quotation before booking.
The package begins with the Kathmandu departure and ends after the return drive. Arrange any Kathmandu nights and airport transfers separately unless they appear in your confirmed quotation.
Rara Lake Jeep Tour Highlights
Why Book the Rara Lake Jeep Tour with Igloo Himalaya Treks?
We plan the seven-day road journey around your dates, with time at Rara and agreed transport, accommodation and walking arrangements.
A Clear Road and Walking Plan
Before booking, discuss daily driving demands, the final roadhead and the walk to Rara. We use your dates and travel needs to agree practical arrangements for the seven-day journey.
Vehicle and Group Arrangements
Tell us your party size and luggage requirements. Confirm the vehicle, seating, driver arrangements and whether your jeep is exclusive or shared before payment, so the transport matches your expected booking.
Accommodation and Cost Details
Your quotation should identify the stays in Kohalpur, Manma and Rara, along with meal allowances and permit coverage. Ask about room facilities and any costs payable locally before confirming the trip.
Planning for Road Conditions
Road access, rain, snow and maintenance can alter travel times. Discuss possible route changes, extra nights and their costs before departure, keeping onward arrangements flexible after the final return drive to Kathmandu.
This seven-day itinerary starts and finishes in Kathmandu, with six planned overnight stays along the route. Driving figures are approximate planning estimates; road conditions, stops and the final parking point can change daily timings.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Kohalpur by Jeep
Overland Highway Drive — Kohalpur (~175 m / 574 ft) — ~12 Hours Drive (~535 km)
Leave Kathmandu early for the long road journey to Kohalpur. Keep drinking water, snacks and essential medicines accessible, with suitable breaks during the day for meals, toilets and rest stops.
The drive forms the first stage of the westward approach rather than a sightseeing circuit. Traffic and roadworks can extend the timing, so allow the full day for travel. On arrival, settle into your agreed accommodation in Kohalpur. Check the next morning’s departure time and prepare your day bag before resting for another driving day.
Day 2: Kohalpur to Manma by Jeep
Karnali Highway Scenic Drive — Manma, Kalikot (~2,033 m / 6,670 ft) — ~7–8 Hours Drive (~250 km)
Continue towards Surkhet and join the Karnali Highway for Manma in Kalikot. The road becomes more winding as the journey moves from lower country towards the mountain districts.
Expect a mixture of paved sections and rougher patches, with progress depending on traffic, maintenance and the weather. Keep your seat belt fastened and take care when leaving the vehicle at roadside stops. Manma is the planned overnight stop before the final approach towards Rara. Prepare warmer clothing for the lake stay and keep essentials accessible.
Day 3: Drive towards Talcha and Walk to Rara Lake
Drive to Roadhead & Hike into National Park — Rara Lake (~2,990 m / 9,810 ft) — ~2 Hours Hike
Follow the road towards the Talcha area, with slower travel on rough sections. At the stopping point, leave the jeep and begin the walk to Rara, carrying the items needed for your lake stay.
The walking estimate is about two hours, although the roadhead and pace can change this. Reach the lakeshore accommodation arranged for your booking and take time to rest. Rara is higher than the earlier stops, so keep today’s activities gentle after arrival.
Day 4: Explore Rara Lake
Lakeshore Exploration, Nature Walks & Photography — Rara Lake (~2,990 m / 9,810 ft) — Full Day Exploration
Spend the day exploring Rara at a comfortable pace. Walk along lakeshore paths, look for birds and choose places for photographs, allowing time to enjoy the water, forest and surrounding hills.
There is no summit hike or full circuit of the lake today. Choose a shorter walk if you prefer, and return to your accommodation for the second night. Boating, horse riding and a Murma Top excursion depend on local conditions and separate arrangements; none is automatically included in the programme.
Day 5: Walk to the Jeep and Return to Manma
Walk to Roadhead & Drive to Kalikot — Manma, Kalikot (~2,033 m / 6,670 ft) — Full Day Travel
Walk back from your lake accommodation to the agreed jeep meeting point. Check the departure time beforehand and keep essentials accessible, as the return road journey to Manma occupies the rest of the travel day.
Retrace the mountain approach, allowing for uneven surfaces and changes to road access. Stops depend on the day’s progress and suitable places along the route. Manma is again the planned overnight base. Settle into your accommodation and prepare for the drive towards Kohalpur tomorrow.
Day 6: Manma to Kohalpur by Jeep
Return Scenic Drive — Kohalpur (~175 m / 574 ft) — ~6–7 Hours Drive (~249 km)
Continue back along the Karnali Highway towards Surkhet and Kohalpur. This is another full road travel day, with breaks arranged around route conditions rather than a fixed list of sightseeing visits or excursions en route.
The road returns towards lower elevations, where temperatures can feel warmer than at Rara. Keep a change of clothing and water nearby. Spend the final planned journey night in Kohalpur, ready for the long return drive to Kathmandu tomorrow morning.
Day 7: Kohalpur to Kathmandu by Jeep
Final Highway Journey to Capital — Kathmandu (~1,400 m / 4,593 ft) — ~12 Hours Drive (~535 km)
Begin the final drive from Kohalpur to Kathmandu, allowing the full day for road travel. Meal breaks, traffic and road conditions determine your arrival time and drop-off arrangements.
The seven-day programme ends after the agreed Kathmandu drop-off. Avoid a tight onward connection that evening, as delays remain possible. A Kathmandu hotel night, airport transfer or later international departure is a separate arrangement unless your quotation includes it.

Driving Demands and Walking Ability
Most of the journey is by jeep, but hours sitting and bends can be tiring. Rough sections may be uncomfortable for travellers with back or joint problems. The final approach involves walking on uneven paths, so the tour requires more mobility than a door-to-door city transfer.
Climbing skills are unnecessary. Comfortable footwear, steady balance and the ability to walk for around two hours help you manage the lake approach.
Tell us about mobility needs, children or difficulty with drives before booking. Vehicle access does not mean the jeep reaches your room. Confirm the roadhead, walking route and any luggage assistance rather than assuming an accessible lakeshore transfer.
Altitude and Health
Rara Lake sits at 2,990 m / 9,810 ft. Travelling by road brings a gain in altitude, and arriving by jeep does not remove the possibility of altitude illness.
Headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue after gaining height need attention. Tell your companion or guide and seek medical advice. Do not go higher while unwell; worsening symptoms require descent and medical help. Discuss health conditions and your planned altitude with a healthcare professional before travelling.
Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance
Discuss health conditions with a healthcare professional before travel. Explain the long drives, remote location, lake elevation and walking, including any optional excursion higher than the lakeshore itinerary.
Arrange insurance covering road travel, walking and maximum altitude, with medical treatment and emergency transport in Nepal. Check assistance arrangements, exclusions and excesses. Local facilities and transport may be limited; do not assume rescue services or medical costs are included in your package.
Accommodation and Overnight Stops
Six overnight stops are planned: two each in Kohalpur, Manma and Rara. Confirm the properties, room sharing and booking coverage. Facilities beside the lake may be simpler than city hotel facilities.
Ask about bedding, toilets, washing water and electricity before booking. Do not assume an attached bathroom, continuous hot water or specified room facilities. Kathmandu nights before departure and after the drive require separate confirmation in your quotation.
Food and Dietary Requirements
Confirm the meal allowance and food before booking. Share dietary requirements early, particularly allergies, as choices may be limited near the lake.
Seasonal fruits can be bought as snacks where available. Wash them with safe water or peel them yourself. Complimentary fruit servings are included only if your quotation confirms that food allowance.
Drinking Water
Carry safe water during drives and walks. Use sealed bottled water or appropriately treated water; avoid drinking untreated lake, stream or tap water.
Keep water accessible, check refill options before leaving accommodation and carry enough for the walk. Confirm whether drinking water is covered by your quotation or paid separately, and take empty containers to disposal points.
Guide, Driver and Luggage Support
Agree who accompanies the tour, the guide’s language and duties, and driver arrangements before booking. Confirm how bags reach Rara after you leave the jeep; porter assistance should not be assumed unless arranged.
National Park Visits and Local Customs
Rara is a protected national park. Follow local visitor instructions, keep to permitted paths and carry rubbish to a collection point. Avoid disturbing wildlife or playing loud music. Ask permission before photographing people, and treat lakeshore settlements and religious places with care during your visit there.
Permits and Personal Spending
A Rara National Park entry permit is required. Confirm the current charge, how it is obtained and whether your quotation covers it. Carry identification and enough Nepali rupees for agreed local payments, drinks and personal purchases.
Road Access and Changes to the Programme
Rain, landslides, snow, roadworks and vehicle issues can interrupt access. Check the route before departure and leave room in your plans for travel delays.
Changed roadheads, extra nights or activities need discussion, including costs. Driving times are estimates, so avoid tight onward commitments after the planned Kathmandu return.
Route and Altitude Profile of the Rara Lake Jeep Tour
The road journey links Kathmandu, Kohalpur and Manma with the Talcha area, followed by a walk to Rara Lake. The lake elevation is approximately 2,990 m above sea level. This profile separates road transit stops from the walking section and lake stay.

Rara Lake

Weather and Best Time for the Rara Lake Jeep Tour
Spring and autumn are commonly chosen for Rara visits, with departure depending on road access and weather. The lake is cooler than the lower road stops. Rain can affect roads, while winter cold and snowfall may restrict access or make walking harder around Rara.
Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the route. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).
Seasonal Weather Conditions
Road & Climate PatternsHow Weather Changes Along the Route
Elevation shifts & roadhead conditionsKohalpur can feel warmer than Rara, particularly during sunny daytime stops. Higher roads and lake evenings need warmer clothing, with waterproof protection kept accessible rather than buried in the luggage.
Rain may slow travel on rough roads and make the walking approach slippery. Snow or ice can affect departures. Wind beside the lake can feel cold, so choose walks to suit conditions and keep time to return before dark.
Pack warm layers, a waterproof shell, and sturdy walking footwear accessible in your daypack during long road journeys.
Which Season Should You Choose
Overland access & seasonal timingConsider spring or autumn, checking road access for dates before booking. Monsoon travel needs flexibility because rain can interrupt mountain roads. Winter requires warm equipment and confirmation of road and accommodation availability; a jeep cannot guarantee access in poor weather.

Rara Lake Jeep Tour FAQs
Essential answers about driving hours, walking approach, permits, accommodation and season choice.
Route & Walking Approach
The programme takes seven days, beginning with the Kathmandu to Kohalpur drive and ending with the return drive to Kathmandu. Six overnight stops are planned along the route. Airport arrival, international departure and Kathmandu nights are separate arrangements.
No. The itinerary includes a final walk from the parking point to Rara. The approximate walking time is about two hours, but access, the roadhead and your pace can alter this. Confirm the approach before departure.
Expect the approach walk to Rara, lakeshore exploration and the return walk to the jeep. Day 4 can follow a walking plan rather than a compulsory full lake circuit. Discuss mobility needs before booking your journey.
Rara Lake is 2,990 m / 9,810 ft above sea level. This is the lake reference, not a confirmed maximum for every road alignment or optional hike. Ask about the route high points and any additional excursion before booking.
No mandatory Murma Top hike appears in this seven-day programme. Day 4 is for lake exploration. If you want the higher viewpoint, discuss walking time, conditions, altitude, support and additional costs before agreeing the excursion.
The plan has two nights each in Kohalpur, Manma and Rara. Properties and room standards need confirmation. Lake facilities may be basic, so ask about toilets, bedding, washing water and electricity before confirming the stay.
Meal coverage is not published as a detailed inclusion list. Your written quotation should identify any breakfasts, lunches, dinners, water or snacks covered. Bring or buy seasonal fruits where available; complimentary servings require confirmation before your booking.
Package prices and group rates are not published. Send your travel dates and party size for a quotation, then check the agreed transport, accommodation, meals, permits and support before paying for your seven-day Rara journey.
Yes. Rara National Park requires an entry permit. Ask how it will be arranged, which charge applies to you and whether the cost is covered by your quotation. Keep the permit and identification available for checks during visits.
Neither activity is automatically included in this itinerary. Availability depends on local arrangements and conditions. Agree the operator, safety arrangements and price before taking part. Day 4 allows time for lakeshore walks, photographs and relaxation at your pace.
Ask about road access and accommodation before booking either season. Rain can disrupt mountain roads, while winter snow and ice can restrict travel. Keep plans flexible, prepare appropriate clothing and discuss what happens if access changes beforehand.
Avoid a tight connection after the return drive. Kohalpur to Kathmandu is a long journey, and traffic or road delays may extend it. Allow time afterwards and arrange a Kathmandu hotel or airport transfer separately unless your quotation includes them.
