Doing the Cho La crossing after visiting Everest Base Camp was the best trekking decision we made. The views from Gokyo Ri rival anything on earth, and Igloo Himalaya Treks took care of every single logistical detail. Traversing the Cho La glacier was thrilling and our guide ensured we had microspikes on and moved with complete safety. Unforgettable 17-day journey!
EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek — 17 Days
Combine Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar and the Gokyo Lakes on our 17-day trek through Nepal’s Khumbu region. You follow the Everest trail through Namche Bazaar and Dingboche before crossing Cho La into the Gokyo Valley.
Key Trip Facts
EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek Overview
Our 17-day EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek combines Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m with Kala Patthar, Cho La and the Gokyo Lakes. You approach through the Khumbu valley, then cross the pass to explore Gokyo’s lakes and viewpoint. The return follows the Gokyo Valley through Dole before rejoining the main trail at Namche Bazaar.
After flying to Lukla, follow the Dudh Koshi valley through Phakding to Namche Bazaar. We spend two nights here, with a shorter acclimatisation hike before continuing towards Tengboche. The route passes its Buddhist monastery and follows the Imja Valley to Dingboche. Along the way, village homes, prayer wheels and mani walls introduce the local Sherpa communities whose lives and traditions form part of the region’s everyday mountain culture.
Beyond Dingboche, rocky trails lead through Lobuche to Gorak Shep for the Everest Base Camp visit. Hike Kala Patthar the following morning, then continue to Dzongla. Cho La connects this valley with Thangnak and the Gokyo route. After crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier, visit the fourth lake and climb Gokyo Ri before descending southwards towards Dole.
Acclimatisation days in Namche and Dingboche allow shorter hikes followed by another night at the same elevation. They help manage the ascent, but altitude illness remains possible. Cho La adds steep rock, snow or ice to the walking, while the Gokyo Ri and Dole stage is long. Previous mountain hiking experience, strong fitness and preparation for changing conditions are recommended.
You stay in mountain teahouses and a Kathmandu hotel. The programme includes arrival, return travel and departure, with fourteen walking days covering the main route and acclimatisation hikes.

Communication When Plans Change
Weather can affect Lukla flights and Cho La conditions. Our team keeps you informed, explains the available options and discusses the next steps with you, including any additional accommodation or transport costs.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Arrival & Welcome — Overnight in Kathmandu (1,400 m) — Hotel Check-in & Briefing
Welcome to Nepal. Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and accompanies you to your hotel. After you settle in, we go through the trekking programme, check your essential equipment and discuss any questions you have.
Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the nearby streets of Thamel or rest after your flight. We also help with any final preparations before you leave for the Everest region.
Day 2: Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding
Mountain Flight to Lukla — Overnight in Phakding (2,610 m) — 3–4 hrs Walk along Dudh Koshi
Your mountain journey begins with a flight to Lukla at 2,860 m. Depending on airline operations and the season, the flight may depart from Kathmandu or Manthali Airport in Ramechhap.
After landing, you meet your trekking team and begin walking towards Phakding. The trail passes village homes, prayer wheels and forested slopes, with downhill stretches and shorter climbs along the way. Sections follow the Dudh Koshi River, introducing you to the valley you will explore over the coming days. We spend the night in Phakding.
Day 3: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Sagarmatha Entry — Overnight in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) — 5–6 hrs Walk & Hillary Suspension Bridge
We follow the Dudh Koshi through villages and pine forests, passing Benkar and Monjo before entering Sagarmatha National Park. Your guide handles the permit checks along the route.
Suspension bridges connect the valley trails, followed by a sustained uphill walk towards Namche. This final climb is the most demanding part of the day, so we allow time for breaks. Namche’s shops, lodges and houses spread across the hillside, making it an important trading town and a useful place to spend the next two nights.
Day 4: Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazaar
Acclimatisation Day — Overnight in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) — 3–4 hrs Hike to Hotel Everest View (3,880 m)
We stay another night in Namche and take a shorter hike above the town. A usual option is the trail towards Hotel Everest View, where clear weather offers views of Everest and nearby peaks.
Your guide chooses the walk according to conditions and how the group is feeling. Afterwards, we return to Namche for the night. The afternoon gives you time to rest, visit the shops or stop at a café before continuing towards Tengboche tomorrow.
Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
Sacred Monastery Trail — Overnight in Tengboche (3,860 m) — 5–6 hrs Walk beneath Ama Dablam
Leaving Namche, we follow the hillside trail before descending towards Phunki Tenga. Mountain views accompany sections of the walk, while the river marks the low point before the climb to Tengboche.
The uphill trail passes through pine and rhododendron forest. Once we reach the village, you can settle into the teahouse and explore the surroundings. Tengboche’s Buddhist monastery stands against the mountain backdrop of Ama Dablam. If it is open to visitors, your guide explains the visiting customs before you enter.
Day 6: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
Imja Valley Ascent — Overnight in Dingboche (4,410 m) — 5–6 hrs Alpine Valley Walk
We descend through forest towards Debuche, cross the Imja Khola and continue through Pangboche. As the route gains height, the trees become fewer and the valley opens into slopes with low vegetation and stone buildings.
The trail passes Somare before reaching Dingboche in the Imja Valley. Today brings a noticeable gain in sleeping altitude, so we keep a steady pace throughout the walk. After checking into your teahouse, the remaining afternoon is available for rest before tomorrow’s acclimatisation hike.
Day 7: Acclimatisation Day in Dingboche
Nangkartshang Viewpoint — Overnight in Dingboche (4,410 m) — 4–5 hrs Hike up to 5,083 m
Our second acclimatisation day includes a hike above Dingboche followed by another night in the village. The usual direction is towards the Nangkartshang viewpoint, with the turnaround point determined by conditions and the group’s progress.
The hillside gives you a broader view of Dingboche and the surrounding valley. We then return to the teahouse, leaving the afternoon for rest and preparation. Tomorrow, the route continues towards Lobuche, where the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and glacial.
Day 8: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche
Thukla Pass Memorials — Overnight in Lobuche (4,910 m) — 5–6 hrs Moraine Trail
We leave Dingboche and cross open ground towards Thukla. After a break, the trail climbs more steeply to the memorial area above the village. The stone memorials commemorate climbers and Sherpas who lost their lives in the mountains.
Beyond this section, we continue beside the Khumbu Glacier towards Lobuche. Uneven ground and increasing altitude make the walking more demanding, even where the gradient eases. We settle into the teahouse and prepare for tomorrow’s journey to Everest Base Camp.
Day 9: Trek to Everest Base Camp and Return to Gorak Shep
Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) — Overnight in Gorak Shep (5,164 m) — 7–8 hrs Walk on Khumbu Glacier
We start from Lobuche and follow the rocky trail towards Gorak Shep. After a break, we continue to Everest Base Camp, crossing uneven glacial ground along the Khumbu Glacier.
Reaching base camp brings you into the landscape used by Everest expedition teams. During the spring climbing season, tents and expedition activity may be visible. At other times, the glacier and surrounding mountains define the visit.
After spending time at base camp, we retrace the trail to Gorak Shep. Tonight’s stop puts us close to the starting point for tomorrow’s Kala Patthar hike.
Day 10: Kala Patthar Sunrise and Trek to Dzongla
Kala Patthar (5,545 m) — Overnight in Dzongla (4,855 m) — 6–7 hrs Sunrise Hike & Descent
We make an early start for Kala Patthar. The climb above Gorak Shep is steep in places, and the altitude makes it demanding. In clear weather, the viewpoint offers close views of Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and the surrounding Khumbu peaks.
After the hike, return to Gorak Shep for breakfast and continue through Lobuche towards Dzongla. Leaving the main Everest trail, we follow hillside paths above the valley. Rocky sections and further climbs make this another substantial walking day before resting ahead of tomorrow’s crossing.
Day 11: Cross Cho La Pass and Trek to Thangnak
Cho La Pass (5,420 m) — Overnight in Thangnak (4,700 m) — 7–8 hrs Glacial Traverse & Descent
We leave Dzongla early for Cho La, climbing from the valley towards steep, rocky ground. Snow or ice can cover the approach and glacier section near the pass. Your guide assesses conditions and chooses the route and pace.
At approximately 5,420 m, Cho La links the Khumbu and Gokyo valleys. After crossing, descend carefully over uneven rock towards Thangnak. This demanding stage requires steady footing, suitable equipment and enough time; reaching the pass depends on conditions and health.
Day 12: Trek to Gokyo, Visit the Fourth Lake and Return
Ngozumpa Glacier & Fourth Lake — Overnight in Gokyo (4,790 m) — 3–4 hrs Glacier Crossing & Lake Excursion
From Thangnak, cross the Ngozumpa Glacier towards Gokyo. Rocky debris and changing glacier paths require care, so follow your guide closely. The village stands beside the third lake, called Dudh Pokhari.
After arriving, the programme continues with a hike to the fourth lake and a return to Gokyo for the night. This excursion adds walking beyond the glacier crossing. Your guide considers daylight, conditions and how you feel before proceeding. Rest afterwards and prepare for tomorrow’s early climb of Gokyo Ri.
Day 13: Gokyo Ri Sunrise Hike and Trek to Dole
Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) — Overnight in Dole (4,038 m) — Full Day: Summit Viewpoint & Valley Descent
Begin before dawn for the steep climb towards Gokyo Ri at approximately 5,357 m. In clear weather, the viewpoint looks across the lakes and glacier towards Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. Return to Gokyo.
After breakfast, continue down the Gokyo Valley through Machhermo and Luza towards Dole. The viewpoint hike and descent together make a long day. Keep warm layers and water accessible, and discuss how you are feeling with your guide while descending.
Day 14: Trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar
Mong La Ridge Descent — Overnight in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) — 4–6 hrs Walk through Rhododendron Forests
We descend from Dole through forest towards Phortse Tenga, then climb towards Mong La. The route combines downhill sections with a substantial uphill stretch before reaching the Namche trail.
Beyond Mong La, follow the hillside towards Kyangjuma and rejoin the main Everest route. Mountain views depend on cloud and weather as we continue to Namche Bazaar. After checking into the teahouse, the remaining afternoon gives you time to rest or visit the town’s shops and cafés at your leisure.
Day 15: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
Final Walking Stage — Overnight in Lukla (2,860 m) — 6–7 hrs Valley Walk & Celebration
Our final trekking day follows the route down from Namche through Jorsalle, Monjo and Phakding. You cross familiar suspension bridges and return through the forested sections of the Dudh Koshi valley.
The approach to Lukla includes uphill stretches, so there is still some effort ahead after the main descent. On arrival, we check into the teahouse for the last night in the mountains. The evening gives you time to organise your belongings and spend time with your guide and porter team.
Day 16: Fly from Lukla and Return to Kathmandu
Lukla Return Flight — Overnight in Kathmandu (1,400 m) — Morning Mountain Flight & Farewell Dinner
We prepare for the return flight from Lukla. Depending on the operating schedule, you may fly directly to Kathmandu or land at Manthali Airport and continue by road.
After reaching your hotel, the remaining time is free for rest, shopping or exploring nearby areas. We share a farewell dinner in Kathmandu, bringing the trekking programme to a close. Flight timing remains dependent on weather and airline operations.
Day 17: Departure from Kathmandu
Homeward Journey — Kathmandu (1,400 m) — Airport Transfer & Departure
Your 17-day EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek ends today. After breakfast, prepare for your onward journey. Depending on your departure time, you may have an opportunity for a final walk nearby before leaving the hotel.

We provide an 80L waterproof duffel bag for your main luggage carried by our local porters (maximum luggage allowance: 10–12 kg per trekker, returned after your trek). Please carry your daypack (5–7 kg) containing your daily drinking water, fleece mid-layer, waterproof jacket, camera, prescription medication, passport, and valuables.
1. Trek Difficulty and Fitness
This trek combines sustained mountain walking with the steep Cho La crossing and glacier terrain. Most stages take several hours, while crossing days and the Gokyo Ri to Dole stage require longer effort. Snow, ice and high altitude can make even short walking stages physically demanding.
Previous mountain hiking experience and strong fitness are recommended. Prepare for consecutive walking days, steep ascents and descents, uneven ground and cold conditions.
Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.
2. Altitude and Acclimatisation
Our itinerary includes acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. These give you time to adjust before continuing higher, but altitude illness can still affect you, regardless of fitness.
Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Crossing Cho La must remain secondary to your health.
3. Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance
If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.
Arrange insurance covering the full itinerary, including trekking to approximately 5,545 metres, Cho La and glacier travel, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment. Check exclusions, excess charges and the insurer’s emergency assistance procedure. Carry your policy details and emergency contact number throughout Nepal.
4. Accommodation and Room Facilities
You stay in a three-star Kathmandu hotel and mountain teahouses. Trekking rooms are shared, usually with twin or triple occupancy. Confirm your city room arrangement and any single supplement before booking.
Higher lodges have simpler rooms and shared bathroom facilities. Private bathrooms are not guaranteed. Bedrooms can be cold, with fewer services around Gorak Shep, Dzongla and Thangnak, so prepare for basic facilities throughout the upper mountain stages.
5. Food and Dietary Requirements
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek. Teahouse menus commonly offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, soups and other straightforward meals.
Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.
6. Drinking Water
Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.
Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.
7. Guide and Porter Support
The package includes a licensed, English-speaking guide and one porter for every two trekkers. Your porter carries the main trekking luggage; you carry your daypack and the items you need during the walk.
8. Showers, Charging and Communication
Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet connections can be unreliable, particularly higher on the route. Carry a power bank and let family know that you may be out of contact for periods of the trek.
9. Permits and Documents
We arrange national park and local entry permits. Carry your passport, insurance details and document copies. Confirm current TIMS requirements and fee coverage with us before departure; obtaining your Nepal entry visa remains your own responsibility.
10. Flight Delays and Extra Time
Lukla flights can be delayed or cancelled because of weather. During peak periods, flights may use Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, requiring a road transfer.
The return flight is scheduled for Day 16, before departure on Day 17. Allow extra time around international travel; delays can involve additional costs.
Altitude Profile of the EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek
Overnight stops rise from Phakding through Namche and Dingboche to Gorak Shep, your highest sleeping point. The route then continues through Dzongla, Thangnak and Gokyo before descending to Dole. The table separates sleeping elevations from Kala Patthar, Cho La and Gokyo Ri, reached during hikes.
Overnight Stops and Altitudes on the EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek
Elevations are approximate and follow the overnight stops in our itinerary.

Day 11 — Cho La Pass
Traverse the high pass at approximately 5,420 m, followed by descent towards Thangnak for the night.
Day 13 — Gokyo Ri Summit

Weather and Best Time for the EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek
Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally offer favourable planning conditions for this Everest and Gokyo route. Snow, ice and wind can still affect Cho La during these seasons. Your guide assesses current conditions before the planned pass crossing.
Seasonal Weather Conditions
Lower forests warm through spring, but March may retain winter snow around Cho La. April and May bring longer daylight, with afternoon cloud and fresh snowfall still possible higher up.
Early September can retain monsoon rain. October often offers clearer conditions, while November brings colder mornings, shorter daylight and possible snow or ice on the crossing.
Severe cold, short days and snow can make Cho La unsuitable. Lodge operation may be limited, and completing the crossing should not be assumed.
Rain affects lower trails, while cloud can obscure views and disrupt Lukla flights. Wet paths, glacier conditions and snowfall can complicate the higher route.
How Weather Changes Along the Route
Phakding and Namche can feel warm in sunshine. Conditions become colder towards Dingboche, Lobuche, Dzongla and Gokyo, particularly before sunrise and after sunset, with exposed paths feeling colder in wind.
Nights on the upper route can fall below freezing during spring and autumn. Cho La and the viewpoints are exposed to wind. Snow and ice affect footing, so discuss suitable traction and carry warm layers, gloves and weather protection.
Which Season Should You Choose?
Choose spring or autumn after discussing pass conditions for your dates. March can retain snow, September may be wet, and late November brings colder days. Winter and monsoon require greater flexibility, with route changes possible if Cho La becomes unsuitable.
