The Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return was the most spectacular trip I have ever taken in Nepal. The trail through Dole and Machhermo is peaceful and quiet compared to the main EBC route. Climbing Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) for sunrise gave us a 360-degree view of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu reflecting on the third lake. Then hopping on the helicopter right beside the lake made the finish stress-free!
Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return (11 Days)
Walk through Namche Bazaar, Dole and Machhermo to Gokyo Lakes, then return to Lukla by helicopter. This eleven-day journey includes an acclimatisation day in Namche and two nights at Gokyo, with time for the Gokyo Ri hike and nearby exploration. In clear weather, the viewpoint offers views of Everest, Cho Oyu and surrounding peaks.
Key Trip Facts
Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return Overview
Our eleven-day Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return follows the Gokyo Valley through Namche Bazaar, Dole and Machhermo. You walk beside mountain lakes, spend two nights at Gokyo and hike Gokyo Ri at approximately 5,357 m. A helicopter returns you to Lukla, replacing the descent on foot before your onward flight and journey to Kathmandu.
After flying to Lukla, walk through Phakding and cross suspension bridges on the way to Namche Bazaar. We spend two nights here, including an acclimatisation hike above the town. Beyond Namche, the trail turns towards Mong La and Phortse Tenga before climbing through forest to Dole. Sherpa villages, prayer wheels and mani walls line sections of the approach, reflecting the Buddhist traditions of the people who live here.
From Dole, the trail crosses open grazing slopes towards Machhermo, then continues beside the Ngozumpa Glacier to Gokyo. The village stands beside Dudh Pokhari, the third lake. The following day includes the Gokyo Ri hike and time for exploration. Afterwards, fly to Lukla by helicopter, stay overnight and take the onward flight the next day.
The helicopter reduces return walking, while the outward trek still involves steep climbs, consecutive walking days and increasing sleeping altitude. Namche provides an acclimatisation stop before the higher valley. Technical climbing skills are not normally required, but preparation remains essential. Walk at a measured pace, report symptoms immediately and allow flexibility if weather affects either flight or the walking programme.
You stay in teahouses along the mountain route and a hotel in Kathmandu. Confirm your accommodation, helicopter arrangements, baggage allowance and seasonal road transfers in the written quotation.

Equipment Planning for Your Trek
Prepare your own sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag unless your quotation confirms loan equipment. Discuss suitable warmth, rental availability and flight baggage limits with us before leaving for Lukla.
Communication When Plans Change
Weather can affect Lukla flights and the helicopter return. Our team discusses available options if plans change, including revised travel arrangements and any additional accommodation, transport or other costs outside your quotation.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Arrival & Airport Transfer — Kathmandu, approx. 1,400 m — 3-Star Hotel Check-in & Trip Briefing
Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and accompanies you to your Kathmandu hotel. After arrival, we discuss the trekking programme and flight arrangements, review equipment requirements and answer your questions about the journey to Gokyo.
Depending on your arrival time, rest at the hotel or explore nearby Thamel. Prepare your documents and trekking bags for departure, and confirm tomorrow’s flight routing and any road journey with us.
Day 2: Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding
Lukla Mountain Flight & River Trail — Phakding, approx. 2,610 m — Dudh Koshi Valley Trek
Your mountain journey begins with a flight to Lukla at 2,860 m. Depending on airline operations and the season, the flight may depart from Kathmandu or Manthali Airport in Ramechhap.
After landing, you meet your trekking team and begin walking towards Phakding. The trail passes village homes, prayer wheels and forested slopes, with downhill stretches and shorter climbs along the way. Sections follow the Dudh Koshi River, introducing you to the valley you will explore over the coming days. We spend the night in Phakding.
Day 3: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Sagarmatha National Park Ascent — Namche Bazaar, 3,440 m — Suspension Bridges & Hillary Bridge
We follow the Dudh Koshi through villages and pine forests, passing Benkar and Monjo before entering Sagarmatha National Park. Your guide handles the permit checks along the route.
Suspension bridges connect the valley trails, followed by a sustained uphill walk towards Namche. This final climb is the most demanding part of the day, so we allow time for breaks. Namche’s shops, lodges and houses spread across the hillside, making it an important trading town and a useful place to spend the next two nights.
Day 4: Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazaar
High Acclimatisation Hike — Namche Bazaar, 3,440 m (High Point ~3,880 m) — Hotel Everest View Panoramas
We stay another night in Namche and take a shorter hike above the town. A usual option is the trail towards Hotel Everest View, where clear weather offers views of Everest and nearby peaks.
Your guide chooses the walk according to conditions and how the group is feeling. Afterwards, return to Namche for another night. The afternoon gives you time to rest, visit nearby shops or organise your equipment before the walk towards Dole tomorrow morning.
Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole
Mong La Pass & Rhododendron Forests — Dole, approx. 4,200 m — Phortse Tenga Descent & Ascent
Leaving Namche, follow the hillside towards Kyangjuma before turning onto the Gokyo trail. The route climbs to Mong La, then descends towards Phortse Tenga, with mountain views when the weather allows.
After crossing the lower slopes, climb through pine and rhododendron forest towards Dole. This stage gains considerable sleeping altitude, despite the descent along the way. We keep a measured pace and check how you are feeling. At Dole, settle into your teahouse and rest before continuing towards Machhermo tomorrow morning.
Day 6: Trek from Dole to Machhermo
Alpine Slopes & Cho Oyu Vistas — Machhermo, approx. 4,470 m — Lhabarma & Luza Pastures
From Dole, the path climbs above the village and follows the hillside through open grazing country. Pass Lhabarma and Luza, with views towards Cho Oyu in clear weather. The higher altitude calls for steady walking.
Forests become less common as the trail continues across slopes with low vegetation and stone buildings. We reach Machhermo and check into a teahouse for the night. Use the afternoon to rest and get ready for tomorrow’s walk towards the lakes and Gokyo Village.
Day 7: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake
Ngozumpa Moraine & Sacred Lakes — Gokyo Village, approx. 4,790 m — Dudh Pokhari Lakeside Teahouses
Leaving Machhermo, follow the valley towards the lakes. Rocky sections and uneven ground call for care as the trail rises beside the Ngozumpa Glacier. We pass the first lakes before reaching Gokyo Village, with breaks along the way.
Gokyo stands beside Dudh Pokhari, the third lake, with teahouses overlooking the water and surrounding slopes. After checking in, rest and organise your warm layers. Tomorrow includes the Gokyo Ri hike before returning here for another night beside the lakes.
Day 8: Hike Gokyo Ri and Explore the Gokyo Area
Four 8,000m Giants Panorama — Gokyo Ri Summit (5,357 m) — Two Consecutive Lakeside Nights
Make an early start for Gokyo Ri if conditions allow. The path above the village is steep, and altitude makes the climb demanding. Keep a steady pace with breaks.
In clear weather, the viewpoint offers views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu, with the lakes and Ngozumpa Glacier below. Descend carefully to Gokyo afterwards, returning to the teahouse for a meal and some rest.
The remaining time allows nearby exploration according to your energy and the weather. Discuss tomorrow’s helicopter arrangements with your guide, then spend another night beside the lake.
Day 9: Helicopter Return from the Gokyo Area to Lukla
Aerial Himalayan Panorama — Lukla, approx. 2,860 m — Chartered Heli Return Flight
Prepare for your helicopter return to Lukla. Your guide coordinates pickup arrangements, while the team confirms whether conditions allow the flight. Follow the crew’s instructions when approaching or leaving the aircraft.
When visibility allows, the flight offers a different perspective on the lakes, glacier and valleys below. After landing in Lukla, check into your teahouse and organise your bags for the onward flight. You stay here tonight; the scheduled journey back to Kathmandu is tomorrow, subject to weather and airline operations.
Day 10: Fly from Lukla and Return to Kathmandu
Scenic Mountain Flight & Return Journey — Kathmandu, approx. 1,400 m — 3-Star Hotel Check-in & Free Evening
We prepare for the return flight from Lukla. Depending on the operating schedule, you may fly directly to Kathmandu or land at Manthali Airport and continue by road.
After reaching your hotel, the remaining time is available for rest or shopping. Organise your belongings and confirm tomorrow’s airport transfer arrangements with our team. Flight timing depends on weather and airline operations, so allow flexibility around your return.
Day 11: Departure from Kathmandu
Trip Farewell & Airport Transfer — Tribhuvan International Airport — Onward Journey
Your eleven-day Gokyo journey ends today. After breakfast, prepare for your international departure and confirm the airport transfer arrangements. Depending on your flight time, there may be time for a final walk near the hotel.
Your departure transfer is arranged according to the confirmed package quotation.

1. Trek Difficulty and Fitness
Moderate to challenging walking across high valley trails, stone steps and the steep Gokyo Ri climb above 5,000 m.
The outward trek involves steep paths, stone steps and uneven high valley trails. The helicopter reduces return walking, while the climb to Gokyo Ri still requires sustained effort above 5,000 metres. Technical climbing skills are not normally required, but consecutive walking days and altitude demand preparation. Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build their endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill with a daypack. Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.
2. Altitude and Acclimatisation
Gradual ascent profile with built-in acclimatisation in Namche Bazaar; safety and health always take priority.
An acclimatisation day in Namche precedes the climb towards Dole. Sleeping altitude increases here; your guide reviews symptoms and progress before continuing. Helicopter return does not prevent altitude illness. Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Reaching Gokyo Ri must remain secondary to your health.
3. Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance
Mandatory travel insurance covering up to 5,357 m, emergency evacuation, and medical treatment in Nepal.
If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take. Arrange insurance covering trekking to Gokyo Ri at approximately 5,357 metres, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check altitude limits, exclusions, excess charges and the assistance procedure. Your scheduled helicopter return is transport, with emergency rescue cover requiring separate confirmation beforehand.
4. Accommodation and Room Facilities
2 hotel nights in Kathmandu and 8 authentic mountain teahouse nights, including two nights beside Gokyo Lake.
The programme plans two nights in a three-star Kathmandu hotel and eight teahouse nights. Gokyo is the highest sleeping stop. Confirm accommodation coverage, room sharing and bathrooms in your written quotation. Rooms and facilities vary between lodges, with simpler arrangements higher in the valley. Expect cold nights around Dole, Machhermo and Gokyo. Two nights at Gokyo allow the viewpoint hike without packing for a descent that same day.
5. Food and Dietary Requirements
Nutritious full-board mountain meals with vegetarian and dietary accommodations gladly handled.
Trekking meals include breakfast, lunch and dinner, with seasonal fruit after dinner when available. Kathmandu stays include breakfast; other meals cost extra. Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.
6. Drinking Water Safety on the Trail
Drink boiled or properly treated water using reusable bottles; single-use plastic bottles discouraged.
Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs. Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.
7. Guide and Porter Support
Experienced government-licensed guide and one porter shared between two trekkers throughout trekking.
An experienced guide leads the trek, with one porter shared between two trekkers. Carry your daypack and confirm the main luggage allowance, helicopter baggage arrangements and the return travel plan for your team.
8. Showers, Charging and Communication
Services vary by elevation; carry a power bank and prepare for remote mountain connectivity.
Shower, Wi-Fi and charging arrangements vary between lodges; confirm which services are included in your quotation. Connections can be unreliable higher in the valley. Carry a power bank, and tell family that you may be out of contact during parts of the walk and return journey.
9. Permits and Documents
Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu entry fees arranged and included in full.
We arrange the Sagarmatha National Park permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit as part of the package. Carry your passport, insurance details and copies of important documents. Your Nepal visa remains your responsibility.
10. Flight Delays and Extra Time
Mountain flights subject to weather; seasonal Manthali road routing and schedule flexibility required.
Lukla flights can be delayed or cancelled because of weather. During peak periods, flights may use Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, requiring a road transfer. There is no separate reserve day. Return to Lukla by helicopter on Day 9, then fly onward on Day 10 before Day 11 departure.
Altitude Profile of the Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return
Sleeping stops rise from Phakding through Namche, Dole and Machhermo to Gokyo, where you spend two nights at approximately 4,790 m. Gokyo Ri is a higher daytime hike. The helicopter then returns you to Lukla. The table separates overnight elevations from places visited during daylight.
Interactive Elevation Map & Trail Gradient
Higher Places You Visit
Hotel Everest View
Around 3,880 m, followed by a return to Namche Bazaar.
Mong La
Approximately 3,975 m, crossed on the trail through Phortse Tenga towards Dole.
Gokyo Lakes
Approximately 4,790 m at Gokyo, where you spend two consecutive overnight stays.

Weather and Best Time for the Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return
Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally the main seasons for this Gokyo helicopter return journey. Both offer opportunities for mountain views and favourable walking, although weather can affect upper trails, the helicopter pickup and onward Lukla flights.
Interactive Temperature Graph & Climate Trends
Seasonal Weather Conditions
Spring
March–MayLower trails gradually warm, with rhododendrons on forested sections. March can retain winter snow higher up. April and May bring longer daylight, while afternoon cloud or haze can affect views and flights.
Autumn
September–NovemberEarly September may retain monsoon rain and cloud. Later autumn often offers clearer mornings, with colder nights around Machhermo and Gokyo. Snowfall and wind can still affect walking or flying.
Winter
December–FebruaryExpect severe cold, short daylight and possible snow or ice on upper trails. Lakes may freeze. Check lodge availability, access to Gokyo Ri and flight feasibility before choosing winter dates.
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into SeptemberRain and cloud affect lower trails, mountain visibility and flight operations. Slippery paths can slow progress. Helicopter availability does not remove weather restrictions, so allow flexibility and discuss the operating plan.
How Weather Changes Along the Route
Lower valley walking can feel warm in sunshine. Conditions become colder towards Dole, Machhermo and Gokyo, especially before sunrise and after sunset. Exposed viewpoints can feel colder still in wind.
Even during spring and autumn, nights around Gokyo can fall below freezing. The Gokyo Ri ascent is particularly cold before sunrise, while wind increases the chill. Carry warm layers and waterproof protection, and follow your guide’s assessment of conditions.
Which Season Should You Choose?
Choose spring for gradually warming days and flowering lower forests, or autumn for often clearer mountain mornings. Neither season guarantees flights or views. Winter and monsoon require closer checks of snow, lodge availability and weather before committing to this itinerary.

Gokyo Lake Trek with Helicopter Return FAQs
General & Route
Yes, provided you prepare for hill walking and the altitude. Previous hiking experience helps, while technical climbing skills are not normally required. Discuss your fitness and experience with us before booking, particularly for the steep Gokyo Ri ascent.
Gokyo Ri, at approximately 5,357 metres, is the highest planned point. Your highest overnight stop is Gokyo Village at around 4,790 metres, where you stay on Days 7 and 8 before the helicopter return to Lukla.
This route follows the Gokyo Valley through Dole and Machhermo, reaching the lakes and Gokyo Ri. Everest Base Camp is on a different route. The viewpoint can offer Everest views in clear weather without that visit.
Day 4 includes a shorter hike above Namche, usually towards Hotel Everest View, followed by another night in town. Your guide adjusts the walk to conditions and how you feel before continuing towards Dole tomorrow.
Your scheduled helicopter return is from the Gokyo area to Lukla on Day 9, followed by an overnight stay there. Day 10 uses an onward flight to Kathmandu or Manthali, with road travel to Kathmandu if landing at Manthali.
Confirm this in your quotation. Published group prices do not specify whether the helicopter is private or shared. Ask about seating, baggage limits, pickup arrangements and extra charges; do not assume everyone and all luggage fly together.
Yes. Weather can delay the Gokyo helicopter flight and the onward flight from Lukla. The itinerary has no separate reserve day, so discuss flexibility before international departure. Extra nights, transport or other changes may involve additional costs outside your quotation.
No. The scheduled helicopter return is part of your transport. Emergency rescue, evacuation and medical treatment are separate expenses. Arrange insurance covering the full trekking altitude and evacuation needs, and check the insurer’s approval procedure and exclusions beforehand.
No. Good fitness helps with the walking demands, but it does not prevent altitude illness. Fit and experienced trekkers can also become unwell. Follow the acclimatisation schedule and report symptoms immediately instead of assuming fitness will protect you.
Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.
One porter is shared between two trekkers for the agreed luggage allowance. Carry water, weather protection and daily essentials in your daypack. Confirm the helicopter baggage arrangements, keeping your passport, money and medicines with you.
The starting price for one person is USD 2,895. Send your travel dates so we can check availability and confirm guide, porter and helicopter arrangements, accommodation and the final quotation for your planned eleven-day journey.
