Upper Mustang Trek Overview

Our sixteen-day Upper Mustang Trek follows village trails from Jomsom to Lo Manthang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Walk through Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Ghami and Charang before exploring the walled town and Chhoser Caves. The return passes through Drakmar and Ghiling, connecting monastery visits, dry valleys and mountain views throughout the journey.

After driving to Pokhara, fly to Jomsom and begin walking north along the Kali Gandaki corridor towards Kagbeni. Restricted-area checks mark the approach into Upper Mustang before the trail continues through Chele and Syangboche. Climbs between village valleys lead to Ghami and Charang, where cultivated fields, stone houses and Buddhist monasteries form part of daily life. Prayer wheels, chortens and mani walls appear regularly along the walking route.

Lo Manthang is the main destination, with two nights allowing town exploration and a Chhoser excursion. Walk through lanes around homes, shops and monasteries, following local visiting customs. The caves lie north of the town and involve additional walking, with steps, ladders or low entrances at some sites. Return to Lo Manthang for the night.

The return towards Drakmar can follow the western trail via Ghar Gompa and Chogo La, crossing higher ground before reaching the village’s red cliffs. Confirm the exact route before departure, as it determines the highest point and the day’s walking time. Continue through Ghiling and Chhusang to Jomsom, then fly to Pokhara before the journey back to Kathmandu and departure.

You stay in mountain teahouses and three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The sixteen-day programme covers arrival, the walking route, cave exploration, return travel and departure from Nepal.

Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary — Day by Day

Our sixteen-day itinerary follows village trails to Lo Manthang, includes a Chhoser excursion and returns through Drakmar to Jomsom. Walking times are approximate; weather, trail choices, flight operations and the group’s pace affect arrangements.

After reaching the hotel, rest or walk beside Phewa Lake if time allows. Keep your main luggage and daypack ready for tomorrow’s early flight to Jomsom. Weather and airline operations can affect the schedule, so confirm the morning arrangements.

Day 3: Fly to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni

Mountain Flight & Trek — Kagbeni (2,810 m / 9,219 ft) — 20 Min Flight + 3–4 Hours Walk

Flight time Approximately 20–25 minutes from Pokhara, subject to weather and airline operations
Walking time Approximately 3–4 hours
Trek distance Approximately 10 km
Overnight altitude Kagbeni, approximately 2,810 m

An early flight takes us from Pokhara to Jomsom, around 2,720 metres in the Kali Gandaki Valley. After landing, meet the trekking team and begin the walk north towards Kagbeni.

The route follows the valley through open ground, with mountain slopes and the river nearby. Wind and dust can increase later in the day. Kagbeni’s narrow lanes, stone houses and monastery introduce Mustang’s village setting. Today brings a substantial rise from Pokhara’s elevation, so keep the afternoon gentle and report any symptoms before continuing higher.

Day 4: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele

Trek — Chele (3,050 m / 10,006 ft) — 5–6 Hours entering Upper Mustang

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours
Trek distance Approximately 13 km
Main activity Restricted-area entry and village walking towards Chele
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,050 m
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Chele

After the permit checks, we leave Kagbeni and continue north into Upper Mustang. The route follows dry valley ground towards Tangbe and Chhusang before the climb to Chele.

Whitewashed houses, fields and Buddhist features appear between the open hills and cliffs. Some sections follow or cross the road, with the precise walking line chosen according to access. The final approach gains height above the valley floor. Walk steadily and use the breaks to drink water before reaching your teahouse in Chele for the night.

Day 5: Trek from Chele to Syangboche

Pass Crossing — Syangboche (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) — 6–7 Hours via Taklam La & Dawa La

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; the chosen trail and stops affect timing
Trek distance Approximately 11 km; longer route variants are possible
Trail character Repeated climbs and descents through the Samar area towards Syangboche
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,800 m
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Syangboche
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We leave Chele and climb through dry hills, crossing higher ground between the village valleys. The route continues through the Samar area before reaching Syangboche, also written Syangmochen in trekking descriptions.

Expect repeated climbs and descents on uneven paths, with occasional road sections depending on the chosen trail. Tonight’s sleeping height is around 750 metres above Chele, so discuss the pace before continuing higher. Keep your guide informed about headaches, nausea or unusual fatigue, and take the afternoon gently after arrival.

Day 6: Trek from Syangboche to Ghami

High Pass Trek — Ghami (3,520 m / 11,548 ft) — 5–6 Hours across Nyi La (4,010 m)

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours
Trek distance Approximately 12 km, depending on the selected trail
Daytime high point Around 4,010 m on the Nyi La route; confirm the agreed trail
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,520 m
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Ghami
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We continue through the higher valley country towards Ghami, with climbs across the Yamada La and Nyi La areas on the usual route. The day’s highest ground lies above the villages where we sleep tonight.

Dry slopes, fields and distant peaks accompany the walk when visibility allows. After the pass sections, descend towards Ghami, where a long mani wall and village lanes reflect local Buddhist traditions. Follow the guide’s chosen trail and keep warm layers accessible on exposed ground.

Day 7: Trek from Ghami to Charang

Mani Wall Trail — Charang (3,600 m / 11,811 ft) — 4–5 Hours via Longest Mani Wall

Walking time Approximately 4–5 hours
Trek distance Approximately 10 km
Main activity Village and valley walking towards Charang, also written Tsarang
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,600 m; the exact lodge elevation varies
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Charang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

Leaving Ghami, we cross the valley and continue towards Charang, also written Tsarang. The route passes dry slopes and open ground between village areas, with climbs and descents despite the modest change in overnight height.

Charang has stone houses, fields and an important monastery above the surrounding valley. After reaching the teahouse, explore nearby lanes if time allows. Follow local visiting instructions at religious sites and ask before photographing residents, monastery interiors or religious paintings.

Day 8: Trek from Charang to Lo Manthang

Approach Ancient Capital — Lo Manthang (3,840 m / 12,598 ft) — 4–5 Hours across Lo La Pass

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours

Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Lo Manthang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We leave Charang and continue across open ground towards Lo Manthang, climbing to the Lo La area before descending towards the town. In clear weather, the approach gives views of the walled capital and the valley around it.

After reaching your lodge, take a gentle walk through nearby lanes or rest. Lo Manthang was the capital of the Kingdom of Lo and remains an important cultural centre. Two nights here allow tomorrow’s town exploration and the Chhoser excursion.

Day 9: Exploration Day in Lo Manthang and Excursion to Chhoser Caves

Exploration & Excursion — Lo Manthang (3,840 m / 12,598 ft) — Chhoser Sky Caves & Ancient Monasteries

Excursion time Approximately 4–5 hours; chosen sites, access and transport mode affect timing
Transport options Horse or jeep arrangements require separate confirmation and quotation
Overnight altitude Return to Lo Manthang, approximately 3,840 m
Accommodation Same teahouse or lodge in Lo Manthang
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We explore Lo Manthang’s lanes and selected monasteries, then make an excursion towards Chhoser, also written Chosar or Chhosar. The town visits and cave excursion are arranged around current local opening times and access.

Cave visits can involve steps, ladders and low entrances, so discuss mobility concerns beforehand. Walking is the basic approach, with horse or jeep options needing separate arrangements. Respect photography restrictions and return to Lo Manthang for the night after completing the excursion.

Day 10: Trek from Lo Manthang to Drakmar

Western Return Trail — Drakmar (3,820 m / 12,533 ft) — 6–7 Hours via Ghar Gompa & Chogo La (4,280 m)

Walking time Approximately 6–8 hours if following the western trail via Ghar Gompa; confirm the route

Daytime high point Around 4,280 m if crossing Chogo La; exact trail to be confirmed
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,820 m
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Drakmar
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We leave Lo Manthang and begin the return towards Drakmar, also written Dhakmar. The western trail can cross Chogo La before visiting Ghar Gompa, a monastery associated with Guru Rinpoche. The exact trail determines the highest point and walking time.

The route crosses open, exposed ground before descending towards the red cliffs around Drakmar. Carry sufficient water and confirm a packed lunch before departure, as refreshments cannot be assumed between villages. Move carefully on loose stones and follow the guide’s assessment of conditions throughout.

Day 11: Trek from Drakmar to Ghiling

Red Canyon Descent — Ghiling (3,570 m / 11,712 ft) — 5–6 Hours through Valley Paths

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours
Trek distance Approximately 13 km, depending on the chosen trail
Trail character Village valleys, pass sections and the approach towards Ghiling
Overnight altitude Approximately 3,570 m
Accommodation Twin-share teahouse or lodge in Ghiling
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We leave Drakmar and continue towards Ghiling, also written Geling. The route returns through the Ghami area, crossing higher ground between villages before reaching the cultivated valley around Ghiling.

Although tonight’s lodge is lower than Drakmar, the trail still includes climbs and descents. Stone houses, fields, chortens and the monastery provide opportunities to see village life after the walking stage. Keep sun and wind protection accessible, and allow time to rest before tomorrow’s descent towards Chhusang along the route.

Day 12: Trek from Ghiling to Chhusang

Cliffs & Valley Walk — Chhusang (2,980 m / 9,777 ft) — 5–6 Hours with Nilgiri Views

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours

Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We continue south from Ghiling, following the route through the Syangboche and Samar areas towards Chhusang. Dry hills, village paths and valley crossings mark a day with substantial changes in elevation.

Expect repeated rises as well as the overall descent. Some stretches meet the road, and the guide chooses the walking line according to access and conditions. As Chhusang approaches, cultivated ground and village houses return beside the valley. Settle into the teahouse and prepare for tomorrow’s walking stage to Jomsom.

Day 13: Trek from Chhusang to Jomsom

Final Trekking Stage — Jomsom (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) — 5–6 Hours along Kali Gandaki Corridor

Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner; seasonal fruit after dinner

We leave Chhusang and follow the Kali Gandaki corridor south towards Jomsom, passing through the Kagbeni area. This final walking stage returns along valley ground beneath surrounding hills.

Wind and dust can build during the day, so keep a buff and sunglasses within reach. Complete the required exit checks and continue towards Jomsom. Sections may follow the road or riverbed, depending on current access. On arrival, settle into the lodge and confirm tomorrow’s flight arrangements with the team before preparing your luggage for departure.

Day 14: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara

Read Before You Book

Before booking the Upper Mustang Trek, consider the walking demands, altitude and basic facilities. These details help you prepare and decide whether the sixteen-day programme suits your fitness, interests and travel preferences.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

This is a moderate trek with repeated climbs, exposed paths and consecutive walking days. Most stages take around four to seven hours, with the western return potentially longer. Dry ground, dust and afternoon winds add to the effort, while high passes rise above the overnight villages.

Previous hiking helps. Build endurance for consecutive hill walks with a daypack, and become comfortable on loose stones, steep descents and uneven paths.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The flight reaches Jomsom before your first night in Kagbeni. Sleeping height rises between Chele and Syangboche. Two nights in Lo Manthang allow exploration but do not guarantee acclimatisation.

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Completing the planned route remains secondary to your health.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is required for this package. Confirm cover for the complete agreed route, including the highest pass, emergency evacuation and medical treatment. Check altitude limits, activity exclusions, excess charges and assistance procedures. Carry your policy details and an accessible emergency contact number.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

Accommodation includes two Kathmandu hotel nights, two Pokhara hotel nights and eleven teahouse nights on trek. The city hotels are three-star, with room sharing and any upgrades confirmed in your quotation.

Teahouse rooms are simple, and twin sharing is included during the trek. Shared bathrooms are common, while hot water, heating and electricity vary. Prepare for cold nights and confirm any specific room requirements before booking your departure.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek, with seasonal fruit after dinner. Menus offer dal bhat, noodles, potatoes and soups.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

A licensed, English-speaking guide accompanies the trek. One insured porter serves two trekkers and carries agreed main luggage. You carry water, weather protection, medicines, documents and other daily essentials in your own daypack.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between teahouses. Mobile reception and power supplies can be unreliable in Mustang. Carry a power bank and prepare for periods without contact. Ask before photographing residents, entering caves or visiting monastery interiors along the route.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Upper Mustang restricted-area permit and ACAP. Confirm current application conditions and permit dates before departure. Carry your passport, visa details, insurance information and required documents for checkpoints throughout the trekking programme in Mustang.

Flight Delays and Extra Time

Jomsom flights depend on weather and airline operations. Confirm the schedule before departure, with flexibility for changes affecting the outward or return mountain journey.

Allow extra time before international departure. This itinerary has no separate buffer day. Additional nights or alternative transport outside the programme may cost more.

Altitude Profile of the Upper Mustang Trek Package

Overnight stops rise from Kagbeni through Chele and Syangboche before the route continues towards Lo Manthang, the highest sleeping place. Two nights there allow town and cave visits. Pass crossings rise above the villages. The table separates overnight elevations from places visited during the day.

Weather and Best Time for the Upper Mustang Trek Package

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally suit the Upper Mustang Trek. Mustang’s rain shadow reduces rainfall compared with Nepal’s southern hills, while wind, dust and cold nights remain common considerations. Mountain visibility and access still depend on weather.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Days gradually warm, while mornings and nights remain cold higher on the route. Wind and dust affect exposed trails. Snow can linger on higher passes early in the season, so check the agreed route before departure.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can retain monsoon rain. October and November often bring clearer mountain views and drier walking conditions, with colder mornings and nights as winter approaches. Flight and trail conditions still need checking.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Cold, shorter daylight and possible snow or ice make higher sections more demanding. Some teahouse services may be limited. Confirm local access and accommodation before choosing a winter programme.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Upper Mustang receives less rain than the southern hills, but the approach roads, flights and river crossings remain vulnerable to wet weather. Allow flexibility for delays and changing access; clear views cannot be assumed.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Pokhara can feel warm and humid, while Mustang’s valleys are drier and more exposed. Cold mornings, strong sunshine and afternoon winds affect walking between villages and across the higher passes.

Even in spring and autumn, nights around Syangboche, Lo Manthang and Drakmar can be cold. Wind increases exposure on higher trails, and snow remains possible on passes. Carry warm layers, sun protection and waterproof clothing throughout the Mustang route.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for gradually warming days or autumn for clearer mountain views after the rains.

Summer departures may suit Mustang’s drier valleys, but approach roads and flights remain vulnerable to disruption. Winter requires assessment of cold, snow and available accommodation.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Igloo Himalaya Treks Experience

Upper Mustang Trek FAQs

Find clear answers regarding walking stages, restricted-area permits, lodge accommodation, and altitude preparation for this 16-day Himalayan journey.

Preparation & Fitness

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Previous hiking helps with consecutive walking days, uneven paths and pass crossings. Build endurance before departure and practise with a daypack. Discuss your experience so the team can assess the route, preparation and walking pace that suit you.

Is the exploration day completely restful?

Day 9 includes exploration, monastery visits and the Chhoser excursion, returning to Lo Manthang for sleep. Activities continue at altitude, so the guide adjusts the pace according to conditions, access and how the group feels.

Do I need to carry my main trekking bag?

One porter is shared between two trekkers and carries main luggage. You carry water, weather protection, medicines and essentials in your daypack. Confirm luggage allowance before departure, keeping your passport, money and valuables with you.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

A sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag are provided on loan for trekking. All three must be returned afterwards. Bring your boots, clothing, toiletries and electronics, and check essential equipment in Kathmandu before leaving for Mustang.

Which permits do I need for Upper Mustang?

You need the Upper Mustang restricted-area permit and ACAP. A licensed guide accompanies the trek, with permits arranged through the agency. Confirm application requirements, carry passport and visa details, and check that validity covers the route.

Do we stay overnight at Chhoser Caves?

The Chhoser excursion returns to Lo Manthang, where you spend two nights. Cave access depends on local arrangements and can involve steps, ladders or low entrances. Horse or jeep alternatives require confirmation; no night at the caves is included.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

Solo travellers can enquire about private or group arrangements. The company checks current restricted-area application conditions, guide availability and the price before confirming a booking. Send preferred dates to receive the arrangements for your trip.

How does the Tiji Festival Trek differ from this?

The Tiji Festival Trek follows the annual ceremony dates in Lo Manthang and includes an eastern return through Yara and Tange, with Luri Cave Monastery. This standard route returns through Drakmar and Ghiling, with dates chosen around general trekking conditions.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

The western return can cross Chogo La at around 4,280 metres if following that trail via Ghar Gompa. Confirm the route before departure. Lo Manthang, approximately 3,840 metres, is the highest overnight stop in this itinerary.

Is insurance covering trekking to 4,000 metres sufficient?

A 4,000-metre limit can fall below the western pass and the Nyi La route. Ask your insurer to cover the full agreed itinerary, emergency evacuation and medical treatment, including the actual highest point, activity exclusions and assistance procedures.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness supports the walking demands but does not prevent altitude illness. Sleeping height rises quickly from Chele to Syangboche, and fit trekkers can become unwell. Report symptoms promptly and review the pace before continuing to higher sleeping places.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.
