10-Day Langtang Valley Trek Overview

Our ten-day Langtang Valley Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Thulo Syabru. From this hillside village, walk towards the Langtang Khola and continue via Lama Hotel and Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa. Spend two nights in the upper valley before retracing the same mountain trail and returning to Kathmandu by road for departure.

The walking route lies inside Langtang National Park, north of Kathmandu in Rasuwa District. Lower paths pass bamboo, oak and rhododendron forest, with sections beside the river and uphill climbs between settlements. Above Ghoda Tabela, trees become fewer and the valley opens towards Langtang Village. Tamang communities, Buddhist prayer walls and village lodges form part of the journey, alongside views that change with the weather and your position.

Kyanjin Gompa is your highest overnight stop, at approximately 3,830 metres. The village has a Buddhist monastery and a cheese factory, with visits depending on opening and local activity. Langtang Lirung rises above the upper valley. Your extra day here allows exploration or a selected viewpoint hike before returning to the same teahouse to sleep.

Day 6 offers a choice of optional viewpoint hikes. Tserko Ri, around 5,000 metres, requires a long, demanding climb. Lower and upper Kyanjin Ri provide different turnaround points, while gentler village walks are also possible. Choose according to your health, preparation and conditions. The return follows the valley to Lama Hotel and Thulo Syabru, including uphill sections among the descents.

This itinerary suits travellers prepared for consecutive walking days and simple lodges. Build fitness beforehand, discuss the ascent and keep the optional high hikes secondary to your health.

Spend an acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa, with an optional hike before returning to the same village to sleep again.

10-Day Langtang Valley Trek Itinerary — Day by Day

Our ten-day itinerary uses Thulo Syabru for outward and return journeys, with two nights at Kyanjin Gompa. Walking times and distances are approximate; road access, weather, trail conditions and pace can change the schedule.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrival — 1,400 m / 4,593 ft — Arrival in Kathmandu

Main activity Arrival, airport transfer and trek briefing
Overnight altitude 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu; twin-sharing basis
Meals Meals according to arrival time and the confirmed quotation

Welcome to Nepal. Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your Kathmandu hotel. After check-in, we discuss the Langtang programme, review your equipment and confirm the arrangements for tomorrow’s road journey north.

Use the remaining time to rest or collect any missing items. Keep your passport, insurance details and permit documents ready, and pack daily essentials separately from the luggage carried during the trek.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Thulo Syabru

Drive — 2,210 m / 7,251 ft — 7–8 hours

Driving time Approximately 7–8 hours; traffic, road repairs and local access can extend the journey
Main route Kathmandu → Trishuli and Dhunche area → Thulo Syabru; exact vehicle access confirmed locally
Overnight altitude 2,210 m / 7,251 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Thulo Syabru; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Hotel breakfast; road-day lunch and dinner as confirmed in your quotation

We travel north from Kathmandu towards Thulo Syabru, using the road corridor near Trishuli and Dhunche. Cultivated hillsides, river valleys and roadside settlements accompany this day of travel.

The final approach depends on current road access and the prearranged vehicle. Thulo Syabru is a hillside village, separate from Syabrubesi below. Settle into the village teahouse and prepare your daypack for tomorrow’s first walk into the Langtang Valley.

Day 3: Trek from Thulo Syabru to Lama Hotel

Trek — 2,445 m / 8,022 ft — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; local diversions and group pace can require longer
Trek distance Approximately 13 km, depending on the connecting trail and lodge location
Main route Thulo Syabru → lower valley and Bamboo area → Lama Hotel
Overnight altitude 2,445 m / 8,022 ft
Accommodation Teahouse at Lama Hotel; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Our first walking day starts from Thulo Syabru. Descend towards the Langtang Khola valley and join the trail near the Bamboo area before climbing along forest paths towards Lama Hotel.

The route includes downhill and uphill walking, so the modest difference between overnight elevations does not describe the effort required. Follow the locally confirmed path where bridges or trails have changed. Bamboo and other riverside stops lead into wooded slopes before the final approach to Lama Hotel, a group of trekking lodges among the trees.

Day 4: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

Trek — 3,430 m / 11,253 ft — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; allow longer for breaks, conditions and the substantial climb
Trek distance Approximately 12–14 km, depending on the lodge and trail taken
Main route Lama Hotel → Ghoda Tabela → Langtang Village
Overnight altitude 3,430 m / 11,253 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Langtang Village; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We climb from Lama Hotel along the forested valley towards Ghoda Tabela. Trees gradually become fewer, revealing more open country and views towards Langtang mountains as conditions allow.

Continue towards Langtang Village, where rebuilt homes and teahouses stand among fields and Buddhist features. Today gains almost 1,000 metres in sleeping altitude, making it a demanding stage. Keep the guide informed about headaches, nausea or unusual tiredness, and review the plan if symptoms develop. After arrival, settle into your room and keep the afternoon gentle.

Day 5: Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa

Trek — 3,830 m / 12,566 ft — 3–4 hours

Walking time Approximately 3–4 hours
Trek distance Approximately 6–7 km, depending on the starting lodge and route
Main route Langtang Village → Mundu area → Kyanjin Gompa
Overnight altitude 3,830 m / 12,566 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We leave Langtang Village and continue past the Mundu area towards Kyanjin Gompa. Prayer walls, small settlements and open grazing land accompany the walk into the valley beneath the surrounding peaks.

After reaching the village, check into your teahouse and keep the afternoon gentle. If open, visit the monastery or learn about local cheese production. Ask before entering religious buildings or taking photographs. We spend two nights here, giving you time to discuss tomorrow’s optional hike and how you are feeling.

Day 6: Acclimatisation Day and Optional Viewpoint Hike

Acclimatisation — Lower Kyanjin Ri approximately 4,443 m / 14,577 ft; upper Kyanjin Ri approximately 4,773 m / 15,659 ft; Tserko Ri approximately 5,000 m / 16,404 ft — Lower Kyanjin Ri approximately 3–4 hours

Walking time Lower Kyanjin Ri approximately 3–4 hours; upper viewpoint approximately 4–6 hours; Tserko Ri approximately 7–9 hours, all return estimates
Hike distance Kyanjin Ri approximately 3–4 km return, depending on turnaround; Tserko Ri approximately 7–8 km return
Optional high points Lower Kyanjin Ri approximately 4,443 m / 14,577 ft; upper Kyanjin Ri approximately 4,773 m / 15,659 ft; Tserko Ri approximately 5,000 m / 16,404 ft
Overnight altitude 3,830 m / 12,566 ft
Accommodation Same teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa; no overnight stay at the viewpoints
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We stay another night at Kyanjin Gompa and choose today’s activity according to your health and conditions. Options include a Kyanjin Ri viewpoint, the longer Tserko Ri hike or gentle exploration around the village.

The higher walks are optional and physically demanding. Do not attempt them with symptoms of altitude illness. Agree a suitable turnaround with your guide, carry water and food, and return to Kyanjin Gompa for the night. Reaching a viewpoint is never compulsory.

Day 7: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

Trek — 2,445 m / 8,022 ft — 6–7 hours

Walking time Approximately 6–7 hours; pace and trail conditions can extend the day
Trek distance Approximately 19–21 km, depending on lodge locations and the selected path
Main route Kyanjin Gompa → Langtang Village → Ghoda Tabela → Lama Hotel
Overnight altitude 2,445 m / 8,022 ft
Accommodation Teahouse at Lama Hotel; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

We retrace the valley from Kyanjin Gompa, passing Langtang Village and continuing down towards Ghoda Tabela. Open mountain ground gradually gives way to forest as the trail loses height.

This is a long return stage despite the lower overnight stop. Uneven paths, stone steps and sustained descents require care, especially after an optional hike. Take breaks and keep water accessible. Once back at Lama Hotel, settle into the teahouse and prepare for tomorrow’s final walking day towards Thulo Syabru.

Day 8: Trek from Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru

Trek — 2,210 m / 7,251 ft — 5–6 hours

Walking time Approximately 5–6 hours; allow longer for trail diversions and the final uphill section
Trek distance Approximately 13 km, depending on the locally confirmed connecting trail
Main route Lama Hotel → Bamboo and lower valley → Thulo Syabru
Overnight altitude 2,210 m / 7,251 ft
Accommodation Teahouse in Thulo Syabru; twin-sharing arrangements
Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee; seasonal fresh fruit after dinner

Our final trekking day follows forest paths down from Lama Hotel towards the Bamboo area. We leave the main valley route and take the connecting path back towards Thulo Syabru village.

The final approach includes a climb, so the day is not entirely downhill. Follow your guide and take care on wet steps or narrow paths. After reaching the village, organise your belongings and confirm tomorrow’s vehicle arrangements. This is your last teahouse night before the road journey back to Kathmandu.

Day 9: Drive from Thulo Syabru to Kathmandu

Drive — 1,400 m / 4,593 ft — 7–8 hours

Driving time Approximately 7–8 hours; traffic, weather and road conditions can cause delays
Main activity Return road journey from Thulo Syabru to Kathmandu
Overnight altitude 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Accommodation 3-star hotel in Kathmandu; twin-sharing basis
Meals Breakfast and farewell Nepali dinner; road-day lunch as confirmed in your quotation

After breakfast, we leave Thulo Syabru by road transport. The journey returns towards Kathmandu along the hill roads and river valleys, with timing dependent on access and traffic.

Once in Kathmandu, check into your hotel and rest after the long journey. We share a farewell Nepali dinner as the trekking programme ends. Confirm your airport transfer time and prepare documents and luggage for tomorrow’s departure from Nepal.

Read Before You Book

Before booking your ten-day Langtang Valley Trek, consider the walking demands, altitude and simple lodge facilities. These details help you prepare, choose a viewpoint hike and decide whether the programme suits you.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Trek Difficulty and Fitness

The Langtang Valley Trek involves steep paths, uneven ground and consecutive walking days. Most stages take five to six hours, while the return from Kyanjin Gompa is longer. Tserko Ri is a demanding optional day hike and should not be treated as an easy acclimatisation walk.

Previous hiking experience is helpful. First-time trekkers should build their endurance before departure and become comfortable walking uphill and downhill with a daypack.

Begin preparing around two to three months beforehand, allowing longer if you are starting from a low fitness level. Gradually combine regular walks, hill hikes and strength exercises. Practise in the boots you will wear on the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The itinerary includes a second night at Kyanjin Gompa. Day 4 gains almost 1,000 metres in sleeping altitude. Review the ascent plan beforehand; fitness does not prevent altitude illness.

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with altitude illness symptoms, even on optional viewpoint hikes. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Breathlessness at rest, confusion or difficulty walking require urgent help.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your route, hikes and any medicines you take.

Travel insurance is compulsory for this package. Confirm coverage for your selected hike, reaching approximately 5,000 metres if choosing Tserko Ri, emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal. Check exclusions, charges and emergency assistance procedures. Carry your policy details and contact number.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

You stay in a three-star hotel in Kathmandu and teahouses along the route. Rooms are arranged on a twin-sharing basis. Bathroom arrangements vary by stop; confirm any upgrade requests before departure.

Mountain rooms are simple and can be cold, especially at Kyanjin Gompa. Bathroom arrangements vary, with shared facilities common. Private rooms may be limited during popular months, and hot showers, charging or Wi-Fi usually involve additional payment.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included during the trek, with fruit after dinner. Lodge menus offer dal bhat, soups, noodles and potatoes.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain strict requirements clearly, including any concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Porter Support

The package includes a licensed, English-speaking guide and one porter for every two trekkers. Your porter carries main luggage; you carry water, weather protection, medicines, documents and essentials in your daypack while walking.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging cost extra, with availability varying between lodges. Mobile reception and internet connections can be unreliable, especially higher in the valley. Carry a charged power bank and tell family that you may be out of contact during parts of the trek.

Permits and Documents

We arrange the Langtang National Park entry permit. Langtang falls under Nepal’s revised guide and agency-issued TIMS provisions, effective from March 2023. Confirm TIMS coverage in your quotation, and carry your passport, insurance details and documents.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Road damage, landslides, repairs and traffic can delay the Kathmandu–Thulo Syabru journeys. Vehicle access and trails need checking before departure, especially after heavy rain.

There is no buffer day after returning to Kathmandu. Allow extra time before international departure; accommodation or transport outside the programme may cost extra.

Altitude Profile of the 10-Day Langtang Valley Trek

Your first mountain night is at Thulo Syabru. Overnight stops rise via Lama Hotel and Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa, where you stay twice. Optional Day 6 hikes reach higher ground before returning to the same village. The table separates sleeping elevations from optional viewpoints.

Weather and Best Time for the 10-Day Langtang Valley Trek

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally offer suitable conditions for the Langtang Valley Trek. Both provide opportunities for mountain views, although cold, cloud, rain and snowfall remain possible. Higher viewpoint hikes require checks for snow, visibility and wind.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Forest trails gradually warm, with rhododendron flowers at suitable elevations. March can retain snow higher up, while May brings warmer walking and possible afternoon cloud. Check snow and wind before choosing a viewpoint hike.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Early September can still bring monsoon rain and road disruption. October and November often offer clearer mountain views, with colder mornings and nights as winter approaches. Rain or snowfall remains possible.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Cold teahouse nights, short daylight hours and snow or ice can make upper trails more demanding. Viewpoints may be inaccessible. Confirm open lodges, road access and the selected walking plan before departure.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Rain can make forest paths slippery and disrupt roads or river crossings. Cloud often limits mountain views. Leeches may occur on lower trails, and the planned route needs careful local checks.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual trek.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Forest walking near Thulo Syabru and Lama Hotel can feel warm in sunshine. Conditions become colder around Langtang Village and Kyanjin Gompa, before sunrise, after sunset and on viewpoint hikes.

Even in spring and autumn, nights at Kyanjin Gompa can fall below freezing. Wind and snow make optional high walks colder and more demanding. Carry warm layers, waterproof clothing and sun protection, and be ready to change the hike.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for warming days and possible rhododendron flowers along the forest trail. Choose autumn, especially October or November, for mountain views after the rains.

Winter and monsoon require more flexibility, with cold, snow, rain and road disruption affecting arrangements.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Igloo Himalaya Treks Experience

10-Day Langtang Valley Trek FAQs

Find clear answers to common questions about walking fitness, highest altitudes, bag arrangements, sleeping equipment, and route details.

General & Route

Can I do this trek without previous trekking experience?

Yes, with fitness and preparation. Technical climbing skills are unnecessary for the walking route, but steep paths and altitude require care. Practise longer hill walks with a daypack, and discuss whether the optional high hikes suit your experience.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

The highest option is Tserko Ri, approximately 5,000 metres. Lower Kyanjin Ri reaches around 4,443 metres, and upper Kyanjin Ri reaches 4,773 metres. All hikes return to Kyanjin Gompa, your overnight base at approximately 3,830 metres.

Does this trek start from Thulo Syabru village?

Yes. Drive from Kathmandu to Thulo Syabru, then begin walking towards Lama Hotel. Return to Thulo Syabru before driving back to Kathmandu. Syabrubesi is a separate place; road access and trail connections need confirming before departure.

Are higher viewpoint hikes compulsory for everyone?

No. Day 6 offers Tserko Ri, a Kyanjin Ri viewpoint or village exploration, depending on health and conditions. You do not need to complete every hike. Choose an option with your guide and return to Kyanjin Gompa to sleep.

Are acclimatisation days complete rest days?

Day 6 may include a hike before returning to Kyanjin Gompa for another night. Tserko Ri is a full-day outing, not a gentle rest walk. A shorter activity or complete rest depends on your health.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness helps with walking but does not prevent altitude illness. Day 4 gains almost 1,000 metres in sleeping altitude, and optional viewpoints rise above Kyanjin Gompa. Report symptoms immediately and review ascent plans rather than relying on fitness.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide immediately about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue higher with altitude symptoms. Descend if symptoms worsen despite rest. Confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent help and immediate descent.

Does this itinerary include Gosaikunda or the Helambu villages?

No. This route ends its outward journey at Kyanjin Gompa and returns via Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru. Gosaikunda, Lauribina La and Helambu belong to a combined itinerary. The Tamang Heritage combination adds village stages before joining the valley route.

Do I need to carry my main trekking bag?

A porter carries your main luggage, with one porter shared between two trekkers. You carry your daypack with water, weather protection, medicines and daily essentials. Keep your passport, money and valuables with you while walking.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and down jacket?

You need suitable insulation for cold teahouse nights and optional high hikes. Confirm whether a sleeping bag, down jacket or duffel is supplied or hired, with charges and return conditions. Bring boots, clothing, toiletries, medicines and electronics.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

Yes. You can enquire about joining a group or arranging a private trek. The solo rate starts from USD 595. Send us your dates to check availability, transport and the final quotation for your booking.

Is insurance covering trekking to 4,500 metres sufficient?

A 4,500-metre limit excludes upper Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri. Ask your insurer to cover your selected route, reaching approximately 5,000 metres if choosing Tserko Ri, plus emergency evacuation and medical treatment. Check activity exclusions and assistance procedures.
