Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Overview

Our twelve-day Upper Mustang Jeep Tour explores Mustang’s villages, caves and Buddhist heritage by road. Travel through Kagbeni, Ghami and Dhakmar to Lo Manthang, then visit Chosar before returning through Jomsom. Kathmandu sightseeing and a full day in Pokhara complete the programme, with hotels and Mustang guesthouses providing overnight accommodation throughout this journey in Nepal.

The journey begins with Kathmandu’s temples, stupas and historic squares before the drive to Pokhara. From there, follow the Kali Gandaki corridor north, passing changing landscapes on the way to Kagbeni. Beyond the restricted-area checkpoint, the road climbs towards Ghami and the red cliffs of Dhakmar. Stops allow village exploration, views of cultivated fields and visits to religious sites where local opening arrangements permit access during your journey.

Lo Manthang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Lo, is the main destination. Two nights here allow time for its lanes and monasteries alongside the Chosar excursion. Cave visits involve local walking and may include steps, ladders and low entrances. Follow local instructions, respect worshippers and ask before photographing people, paintings or monastery interiors.

The jeep carries you between overnight stops, but the journey still involves drives on uneven roads. Dust, wind and access conditions can affect comfort and timing. Sleeping height rises quickly from Kagbeni to Dhakmar, so discuss the pace before travelling higher. Short village walks, uneven paths and cave stairs also need consideration when assessing whether this programme suits your mobility.

You stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara hotels and Mustang guesthouses or teahouses. The twelve-day programme covers arrival, sightseeing, road travel, village visits, the Chosar excursion and final departure.

Read Before You Book

Before booking Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, consider the road conditions, altitude and accommodation standards. These details help you prepare and assess whether the twelve-day programme matches your mobility, health and travel preferences.

0/10 read Click topics below to explore essential briefings

Tour Demands and Fitness

The tour replaces sustained trekking with jeep journeys, but several drives last seven hours or longer. Rough surfaces, dust and repeated bends can be tiring. Village paths, monastery steps and cave ladders involve walking, so the programme requires suitable mobility and tolerance for extended road travel.

Discuss mobility limitations, back problems or travel sickness before booking. Ask about vehicle access, seating and the walking needed for each cultural visit.

Practise regular comfortable walks on uneven ground and stairs before departure. Choose footwear with good grip and discuss any assistance needs in advance. If road travel causes motion sickness, seek advice about suitable management before the journey begins.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Sleeping height rises from Kagbeni, around 2,810 metres, to Dhakmar, around 3,820 metres, within one day. Two Lo Manthang nights follow, but the programme has no dedicated acclimatisation day.

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not continue to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite resting at the same elevation, descent is necessary. Completing the road programme remains secondary to your health.

Medical Conditions and Travel Insurance

If you have an existing medical condition, seek advice from a healthcare professional familiar with high-altitude travel before booking. Discuss your planned route and any medicines you take.

Arrange travel insurance covering the complete agreed road route, high-altitude stays and local walking, including medical treatment and emergency evacuation. Confirm the highest planned road or visiting point with the company and insurer. Check activity exclusions, excess charges and emergency assistance contact procedures.

Accommodation and Room Facilities

Accommodation comprises three Kathmandu hotel nights, three Pokhara hotel nights and five Mustang guesthouse or teahouse nights. Confirm hotel standards, room sharing, bathroom arrangements and any requested upgrades in your quotation.

Mustang rooms can be cold, and facilities vary between villages. Shared bathrooms may be used, while hot water, heating and electricity can be limited. Confirm bedding before departure and bring extra warmth where the accommodation requires it.

Food and Dietary Requirements

Mustang breakfast and dinner follow your quotation. Confirm lunches, city meals and drinks separately; seasonal fruit follows dinner according to your programme.

Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss what can be arranged along the route. Explain any strict requirements clearly, including concerns about shared cooking equipment.

Drinking Water

Carry reusable bottles and drink boiled or appropriately treated water. Water from a clear stream or an untreated tap may still contain germs.

Boiling is the most reliable way to kill germs. If boiling is unavailable, filtration followed by disinfection offers broader protection than many portable filters alone. Follow the instructions for your treatment equipment or tablets.

Guide and Driver Support

A professional driver handles the road journey. Confirm the licensed guide arrangements for restricted-area entry and sightseeing before booking, including language, responsibilities and quotation coverage. Keep medicines, documents and valuables in your daypack.

Showers, Charging and Communication

Hot showers, Wi-Fi and device charging may cost extra, with availability varying between guesthouses. Mobile reception and power supplies can be unreliable in Mustang. Carry a power bank and prepare for periods without contact. Ask before photographing people or entering caves and monastery interiors during visits.

Permits and Documents

The package lists Upper Mustang restricted-area entry and ACAP. Confirm permit dates, current application conditions and guide arrangements before departure. Carry your passport, visa details, insurance information and required documents throughout the programme, including during checkpoints.

Road Delays and Extra Time

Rain, landslides, snow and road works can delay the journey. The driver assesses conditions, and stops or road routing may change according to access.

Allow flexibility before international departure. Day 10 is planned for Pokhara exploration. Extra nights or alternative transport outside the agreed programme may cost more.

Altitude Profile of the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

The road journey rises from Pokhara to Kagbeni and then Dhakmar, with a substantial increase in sleeping height. Lo Manthang is the highest planned overnight stop, where you spend two nights. Road passes and the Chosar excursion can reach higher elevations than the overnight villages.

Weather and Best Time for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, generally suit this Mustang road journey. Upper Mustang receives less rain than Nepal’s southern hills, but the approach roads remain vulnerable to monsoon disruption. Wind, dust, cold nights and changing visibility need consideration.

Find out the temperature ranges you will experience along the trail. Toggle between daily variation and monthly averages, and switch units below to convert between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Seasonal Weather Conditions

Year-Round Climate Patterns
Season Months What to Expect
Recommended
Spring
March–May Days gradually warm, but Mustang mornings and nights remain cold. Wind and dust affect exposed villages and roads. Snow can still affect higher sections early in the season, so check access before departure.
Peak Views
Autumn
September–November Mountain views often improve after the rains. September may retain wet weather, while later autumn brings colder mornings and nights. Road conditions still need checking before travel.
Cold / Quiet
Winter
December–February Cold, shorter daylight and possible snow or ice can restrict higher roads. Guesthouse services may be limited. Confirm local conditions and available accommodation before committing to a winter departure.
Flexible Pacing
Monsoon
June–August, sometimes extending into September Upper Mustang’s rain shadow reduces rainfall locally, but roads between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Mustang remain exposed to heavy rain and landslides. Allow flexibility for delays, changing access and reduced mountain visibility.

These are seasonal patterns; conditions can vary from year to year and during an individual tour.

How Weather Changes Along the Route

Elevation gradients & trail exposure

Kathmandu and Pokhara can feel warm, while Mustang’s villages are cooler, drier and exposed to wind. Conditions change rapidly between the lower valley and higher road passes or cave visits.

In spring and autumn, mornings and evenings around Dhakmar and Lo Manthang can be cold. Wind and dust affect outdoor visits, while snow may interrupt higher roads. Keep warm layers, sun protection and waterproof clothing accessible throughout the tour.

Carry warm layers, sun protection, and reliable weather protection accessible in your daypack throughout the route.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Optimal timing for trek priorities

Choose spring for gradually warming days or autumn for clearer mountain views after the rains. Early autumn can still bring rain.

Monsoon and winter require greater flexibility around road conditions, cold and transport changes.

Contact our mountain team to check real-time trail conditions, lodge openings, and road access for your preferred travel window.

Upper Mustang Jeep Tour FAQs

Find clear answers regarding vehicle travel, permit regulations, high-altitude accommodation, and mountain road conditions for this 12-day overland tour.

Practical Logistics

Can I join this tour without previous trekking experience?

Previous trekking experience is unnecessary for the road itinerary. You still need to manage village paths, monastery steps and possible cave ladders, alongside long, rough drives. Discuss mobility needs, travel sickness and altitude concerns before confirming your booking.

Which permits are needed for the jeep tour?

The package lists the Upper Mustang restricted-area permit and ACAP. Travel must follow the current entry arrangements, with guide allocation confirmed before departure. Carry your passport and documents for checks, and confirm the covered permit dates.

Do I need to carry my main travel bag?

Your main luggage travels in the jeep between overnight stops. Keep medicines, water, warm layers and valuables in a daypack for visits. Confirm capacity and luggage space before departure, especially when travelling with a group.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and warm jacket?

Bring a warm jacket and check the bedding provided at guesthouses. A sleeping bag may be useful where bedding is insufficient. Equipment loans are not confirmed for this tour, so arrange any hire or supply before departure.

What is the highest altitude on this itinerary?

Lo Manthang, approximately 3,840 metres, is the highest planned overnight stop. Road passes and the Chosar area reach around 4,000 metres. Confirm the highest point for the agreed roads and visiting sites before arranging insurance coverage.

Does this programme include acclimatisation days?

There is no acclimatisation day. Sleeping height rises quickly from Kagbeni to Dhakmar before the two Lo Manthang nights. Discuss the pace before departure and report symptoms promptly; repeated nights alone cannot guarantee comfortable adjustment.

Does being fit protect me from altitude sickness?

Fitness helps with local walks and the travel demands but does not prevent altitude illness. The road approach gains height quickly. Fit travellers can also become unwell, so report symptoms early and review the pace before continuing higher.

What should I do if I feel unwell at altitude?

Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Do not ascend to a higher sleeping altitude while experiencing symptoms of altitude illness. If symptoms worsen despite rest at the same elevation, descent is necessary.

Is every day spent inside the jeep?

Driving connects the overnight stops, while sightseeing involves time outside the vehicle. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Lo Manthang and Chosar include local exploration. Village paths, steps and cave ladders mean walking demands vary between visits; discuss access and your pace beforehand.

Can I book as a solo traveller?

Solo travellers can enquire, with the company checking restricted-area application conditions, guide arrangements and private or shared options. Package rates are not published. Send your dates to receive the quotation and arrangements for your booking.

Are all meals included in the package price?

Confirm the daily meal basis in your written quotation, including Mustang breakfast and dinner, lunches, city meals and drinks. Seasonal fruit follows dinner. Additional food and drinks remain personal expenses unless included in your final written package quotation.

How does this programme differ from the Mustang Trek?

This twelve-day programme uses a jeep between Mustang’s stops and includes Kathmandu sightseeing and Pokhara exploration. The Upper Mustang Trek involves sustained walking between villages. Both require preparation for altitude, local conditions and the cultural sites visited along their routes.
